Loved the report Nicole Marie gave today of folks at NASA and CERN being battered with emails and calls in reponse to the new movie 2012 asking if the world is really going to end. Basically, NASA and CERN folks are pissed off at the movie industry for making people annoy them.

HA! I am getting together with my pals (men's nite at the movies) to see this tomorrow. We all agreed to leave our brains checked at the door before watch it. :dunce:

Speaking of the movies, remember that scene from "Lady and the Tramp" where Tramp asks Lady, "Ya ever chase chickens?"...

Sky and Telescope magazine had a nice article on the 2012 frenzy and Mayan calendar in last month's issue.

It's about as significant as your car's odometer reaching all 9's and rolling over to zeroes. In fact that's just what the calendar does but it's not in arabic numerals or base ten arithmetic. The "alignment" of our solar system with galactic center won't actually happen it's only a near flyby, furthermore nobody's sure exactly where that center is because milky way's edges aren't distinct. So if you have any friends who are actually worried tell them to ease up.

Here's a link that should get there. A great little magazine BTW.

Noted archaeoastronomer E. C. Krupp explains all the details, and the history of this mania, in the November 2009 issue of Sky & Telescope. The November issue is no longer available on newsstands, so we're making Krupp's article available as a PDF.

I just plan to sit back and watch the fracas...

somewhere in all this there's a Jimmy Buffet song.....

Oh, I'm not worried about it. I've seen enough of those post-apocalyptic films on USA's Up All Night to actually look forward to the end of the world as we know it. If you're not familiar with them, it's safe to say that simply that the post-apocalyptic world will be full of scantily-clad young females with not enough men to go around. Apparently, all women's clothing will be destroyed in the apocalypse, so that they will be reduced to wearing fur bikinis, whereas there are apparenlty sufficient stocks of NASA coveralls left for all us remaining men-folk.

Besides, after four years of the Obama administration, the apocalypse will be the change we are seeking. ;)

I know you're not worried. But some of my friends around here actually were.

Love those scifi apocalypse films, well most of them anyway, and aren't the effects getting spectacular!
...But even Spielberg couldn't rescue that recent 'War of the Worlds' .

You're right about them uncovering the girls. Watching 'Galaxyquest' I wanted to give poor Sigourney Weaver my coat.

What will happen when this date comes and goes and we are all still here?
I believe someone will come out and say this is the correct calculation and a "New Date" provided.

Bah Humbug....

The End of the World now has its own website.

I guess that makes it official. Nothing is official until it has its own website.
