2010 Census

Postby Haggis@wk » Mon Mar 08, 2010 5:41 pm

One-quarter of the space on this year's census form is taken up with questions of race and ethnicity, which are clearly illegitimate and none of the government's business .I have a proposal.

Question 9 on the census form asks "What is Person 1's race?" (and so on, for other members of the household). My initial impulse was simply to misidentify my race so as to throw a monkey wrench into the statistics; a Puerto Rican Muslim or a Samoan Buddhist. But lying in this constitutionally mandated process is wrong. Really — don't do it.

Instead, I am answering Question 9 by checking the last option — "Some other race" — and writing in "American." It's a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes.

In fact, "American" was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.\

So remember: Question 9 — "Some other race" — "American". Pass it on.

We have a similar problem here. Many of us object to being labelled "European" when, as O.T. can confirm, we're not. Quite apart from geography, contact with modern Europeans reveals considerable differences. These may be to do with wealth (you have to be rich to send a child to school on the other side of the world for 6 months or more and pay full fees), and it's hard to define the distinctions, but they're there all right.

After 2 or 3 censuses when many of us wrote in "Pakeha" or "New Zealander" the census organisers gave in and accepted both of those answers in the last census.

The census designers themselves fail to recognise the difference between ethnicity and nationality. If they'd asked for "Caucasian" or "Polynesian/Maori" or "Mongoloid" nobody would have understood the question but at least it would have been accurate.

I had to design a questionaire on race/ethnicity per FDA quidelines.

Ethnicity
hispanic/latino
non-hispanic/latino
refused
unknown

Race
white/caucasion
black/negro
pacific islander/native hawaiian
Asian
american indian/native alaskan.

The Germans were quite puzzled by the first bit.
The usual question was "whats a hispanic/latino?"
It was hilarious. The first answer that sprang to mind for a European population was 'someone from Spain', but that isnt really true!

What's a non-Hispanic Latino? A South American Indian? A descendant of the Aztecs & Incas?
