Mufi Hanneman, the current mayor of Honolulu, is running for governor. Parties like to pick governors as candidates as they have a similar job experience. My guess is that he intends to run for POTUS eventually. He has some appeal, and if none others do, he could be nominated.
Belonging to the Mormon church could hold him back. I cringed when he played the race card during the election (his opponent was white).
Other than those items he is electable.
