PETS!!!!

I'm a sucker for dogs. Always have been always will be so I started this thread to celebrate our companions in life be they dogs, cats, chain saw parrots (ahem, OT) or rocks. Here's mine.

Abby (really it's AB for ankle biter)

I found Abby and her mom Buffy on the street in Dec 2008. They'd been turned out by someone and were collarless. There were being stalked by a coyote so I don't know if there had been other puppies. The shelter estimated Abby at no more than 3 months old, she was still trying to nurse in the early days. There is a special corner of Hell reserved for people who abandon dogs

Haggis. Haggis has a place in my heart that will never be replaced. I've had him since 2003 and he turned seven this year. He is the world's greatest ball catcher and just a good guy to pal around with. He goes in the car with me when we look for stolen trucks. Everyone shies away from him but he's really a wimp; he's terrorized by Buffy and Abby. He was tormented (read "tortured") by a small boy before his first family deposited him in the shelter and he becomes very quiet and subdued in the presence of any child. It's troubling to know a future serial killer is growing up in my neighborhood.

My youngest came home one night with a bundle under his coat. "What's that"? asked his mother. "My dog", said Youngest. Youngest eventually went to Sydney, and the dog stayed with us for many years until he died at 16. He was an excellent companion.

Oddly enough, my cat, called "Rima" because she is my 5th cat (it's Maori) follows me around in a most dog-like fashion. Where I am, there she is. I think she was a dog in her last life. Probably one that chased cats.

Our pets are all drop-offs. We currently have two dogs, since Messiah died a few months ago. I believe I mentioned her on the board. She and a sibling were thrown off the bridge at Rock Spring. The sibling apparently hit the rock and died, but Messiah must have landed in the soft mud. We found her on Easter morning, as we were out for a walk. She was yapping loudly, apparently having spent a cold and lonely night with on the muddy bank below the spring. She was small enough to hold in one hand, probably just weaned. My guess is that her owner culled the females from the litter, and tossed them off the bridge, but I'm not sure. We raised her, and had her for about seven years.

We currently have Gracie and John-Boy. We returned from Christmas vacation three years ago to find her hanging around the house. We had contractors putting a new roof on the house at the time, and they said she just showed up one morning.

John-Boy is an Australian Shepherd. She actually belongs to our neighbor, but has remained at our house for a couple of years now. The neighbors divorced and both moved out, so the dog just sort of migrated our way, even though he had been a regular visitor for sever months prior. The feeder and the presence of other dogs apparently suited him better than his regular home. He is a sneaky sort, and I'm not overly fond of him, which is probably why I still claim him as the neighbors rather than our own, despite his long-term presence at our house.

I've discussed the cats elsewhere. We seem to be down to only one domestic cat, with the passing of Momma Cat, and half-a-dozen or so semi-domestics. The semi-ferals probably number around a half-dozen also. I can't count the feral cats, as they rarely come around in the daylight.

The coyotes seem to have been coming closer to the house than usual this year, and the cat population seems to be suffering as a result of it. I suppose the long winter had something to do with that. Rabbits are now becoming more numerous, so the coyotes' regular food supply may be returning, hopefully keeping them away from the house.

Ours. is a "pet-a-fied" household. We have two dogs...both Goldens. One is form champion lines (the youngest) and the other is just a phenominal backyard breeder dog. Cassie has been on Billboards, greeting cards and giant electric compter signs for her incredible ability to hunt tennis balls and put them (4-5 of them) in her mouth at one time. She's the sweetest dog you ever met:

We also have two cats....Beast and Allie as well as a rather large tank of fish. My wife Bonnie raises birds however and we usually have in the vicinity of 100 - 130 finches, canaries, and mixed breeds that she shows and enters into song competitions.

1 feathered bolt-cutter aka beemer the harlequin macaw (cross of greenwing and blue&gold macaws), I think he's about 28 now. OT's had him since he was 8 mo old. The only rainbow color missing from him is purple. He's even got both the blues.

1 gecko aka Gek, who's been the source of much stress for me (its a good life, when the health of a pet gecko can be a major worry, yes?) but who actually ate a cricket again, yesterday. So what if he ran away from one this morning.... sigh.

1 cat, piqaboo. So named because she was approximately 10-9x (or is it 10-12?) times smaller than the other cat, Boo. Also, she has a white band across her eyes that makes it look like she's peering thru the mail slot.

Hoped for additions - dog, tadpoles, fish. Herself wants a parakeek, but himself says no, as it will set up dominance stuff in beemer and we'll all be the worse for it. I dunno, we'll see.

Went to the Vet last night with Jenny for a checkup...

You all have a HUGE HUG and THANKS for your prayers.

Jenny has been given basically a clean bill of health. (not bad for a 13 year old pup)
She is 85 pounds (was 84 last time). Has a healthy appetite and if she shes a rabbit or squirrel... turns into a 2 year old pup
who wants to go after them.

The vet said her heartbeat is strong and regular and she was surprised after the sonagram revelaing the tumor on her heart
last January that she has made it this far. She said this type of tumor ususally grows very fast and the quality of life goes downhill quickly.

It is very possible Jenny had a mild stroke last January as well. Other than sleeping alot, she is acting very normal.

AGAIN ... OUR HUGS and THANKS for your support and prayers.
I realize things can change very quickly but
we are thankful for each day of joy and love Jenny provides!

BTW - Jenny hates going to the vet.... I owe her a Carvel Vanilla cup for last night (she LOVES soft Vanilla ice cream)

Delta Airlines loses a dog, offers a couple hundred bucks and a voucher as compensation. I cannot begin to describe the relentlessness of my media jihad if this happened to Haggis. Every post, email, and letter would end with Delta Delenda Est. Then again, it would be hard to mount such a campaign from my jail cell, which is where I would be after beating the Delta flack senseless upon hearing the offer.

DELTA = sucky airline.

I have not flown Delta for years.... as they always seemed to "Misroute" my luggage on flights with no connections

BUT... can't post what I want to say............

DELTA SUCKS.... IMHO.....

Worst flight I was ever on, and the rudest cabin attendant I ever dealt with, was a cross-country flight escorting my Dad's body to Tennessee.

The general coldness and utter lack of any sense of empathy was unbelievable. I guess I was lucky they didn't lose him...

Meet Buzz.

This picture was taken the morning after we brought him home in 2001. He's still just as active, just as cute, and he's the only cat I've ever known that roars.

Cute kitten. If I'd known you wanted one, I'd have sent one over. We have lots of 'em. The woods around here are full of 'em.

I surrender. No one bit.

Meet Bella. And Altoid.

Now, why doesnt that show up as a picture?
[slaps head] doh. Because I used the URL instead of the IMG code. [/slaps head]
but, it still wont work. It says it cant determine the dimensions of the image.

Is it just the pic, or does Altoid have seriously long legs! Great to have a dog that comfortable with kids.

[begin reminisce...] My folks tell the story of when I was a baby and visiting my grandparents. Uncle and aunt had come up with their daughter and Great Dane. Great Dane immediately took it upon himself to become protector of me and my brother in addition to my cousin. At one point I was asleep on the floor and he curled himself around me and gave a low growl if anyone came too close. And I remember, many years later, being just the wrong height and stuck behind him in a narrow kitchen - got his tail in my face a few times.... [/end reminisce]
