system slowed down over course of several days and lost half its memory.
Then started crashing, wouldn't run long enough to do a virus scan.
Finally wouldn't boot gave only "FDC error" whatever that is.
I phoned my IRA folks and shut off internet access.
Was just about to put it out of its misery, decided to have one look inside for anything obvious. Sometimes you get lucky and see something physical.
Noticed the dust buildup around memory sticks was awesome and processor heatsink fins were packed almost solid below the little fan.
Took it out in yard and with a soft paintbrush and compressed air raised a cloud of dust like when you beat a rug.
Put it back together and it booted, ran virus check and got passing grade, seems fine now.
I guess the lesson is after winter when humidity goes up so does conductivity of dust bunnies.
Simple cleaning in bright sunlight where i could see well saved me a trip to the city.
Hope this helps somebody else.
But darn, i was so looking forward to that Mac....
