The French Gourmet

Having immigrated from France in 1972, Michel Malecot owns a restaurant (The French Gourmet) , bakery and catering company in San Diego. In the words of Sarah Kershaw of the N.Y. Times, "now it is the knotty issue of immigration that has made him a local cause célèbre, thrust him into one of the nation’s most contentious debates, jeopardized his future and sent a current of fear through the $550-billion-plus restaurant industry." Last April, Malecot was indicted on charges of illegally hiring 12 undocumented immigrants and continuing to employ them after learning that they were in the country illegally. If convicted, he faces the possibility of forfeiture of the restaurant building, along with an adjacent rental property, Froggy's Bar and Grill.

This Malecot dude caters out of my price range - way out. (I checked the menus. The catering menu has no prices listed, the lunch menu offers a grilled cheese sammich with slaw for eleven bucks. In french, of course.) And this is the first I've heard of it.

At those prices, he can't find legals to work in the kitchen? And are they the usual spanish-speakers, or did he smuggle in some french illegals?

BTW, I had grocery-store sushi for supper last night. Shrimp inari, surimi roll, and a spicy tuna roll. The lable was trilingual - Spanish, Vietnamese (I'm pretty sure) and something with complicated characters that I'll guess was Chinese. Only in California...

The French Gourmet has been around a looooong time. It was a favorite for onion soup back when I was in college.
He knows better. Plus there are > 3 colleges in a 10 mile radius from his place.
I am not sure why he'd lose his two businesses instead of getting fined with a payment plan.
Seems like stupidity there too.

Gosh, I sure hope not. See, there's this goat that's caught my eye, and I'm fixin' to leave Piq for her. You know, slippery slope and all...

San Francisco supervisors gave preliminary approval Tuesday to expanding a law that restricts drug stores from selling tobacco products to also apply to grocery stores and big box wholesale clubs with pharmacies.

Seriously. Story here

Looks like, in SF, it's easier to buy pot than tobacco. They're both weeds, right? Light both of 'em up. Difference is, one is addictive and illegal and dangerous and the other one makes you mellow...

It seems clear that the political class of California will continue to misgovern their state into ruin, confident that the state is too big to fail and will be bailed out by the rest of the country.

What would it mean legally for a state to go bankrupt (or whatever would be the appropriate term)?

Does there already exist a mechanism–like the bankruptcy courts for individuals and corporations–for dealing with it?

If not, what might a salutory federal law look like–some shot across the bow making it likely that bail-outs will not be forthcoming? Presumably (unfortunately) the only liability destructive officeholders face is that of being voted out of office.

I seem to remember vaguely that sovereign countries have defaulted on loan repayments before. Brazil comes to mind, though I may have the wrong country. Mexico? I have no idea what happened, but it may be instructive to find out. California is, as the heading to this thread says, a country. The world's 7th largest economy, or thereabouts. I would take it for granted that the other 49 states would bail it out, but there would undoubtedly be a price to pay.

Poor countries frequently have their loans forgiven.

Argentina defaulted in 2001. The Confederate States of America never repaid its debt, which is why all those dollars they issued are simply collectibles that can be found in antique stores all over the nation (real ones and fakes, with little difference in value between the two).

The closest we've had was New York City's financial crisis in the 1970s. The State and federal governments came to their rescue with a bailout, and I do not believe they defaulted on any obligations.

Real CSA currency is worh many times it's face value to a collector. Notes range from under one hundred dollars for the most common and heavily printed series, to the tens of thousands for the rarest. Most of the heavily printed issues are still available to some extent, while the less common series are getting extremely hard to find.

One thing is certain though, Confederate currency makes as a better investment than ours.

My Congressman just emailed that he is preparing a bill that will prevent the federal govt, from helping out state governments. I wouldn't mind helping the state govts if the exector is one of the IGs and assumes control of the state's budget completely, something that CA probably wouldn't agree to.

What did we do when states like Louisiana were dead-broke?

Be interesting to see what happens w our new and used governor.

BTW, you guys planning to stop buying vegetables? Dairy?
Watching movies?

Sure wish SD would stop buying $14K speedmonitors. Maybe if we get a new city council.
