Need a Quote

Postby ai4i » Wed Mar 23, 2011 11:46 pm

Been searching the web but only found one loose para phrasal of a quote I had recently heard about.
A reviewer writes that Bela Bartók's violin concerto will never replace those of Brahms, Mendelssohn, or Beethoven.
Bartók replies with something to the effect that, "Only a fool would expect his work to replace those earlier masterpieces".
His full reply was a dagger wielded with modesty and wisdom.

According to the footnote on page 194 of Donald Maurice's "Bartok's Viola Concerto", the quote was:

"Who ever heard of any composer writing a concerto to replace another composer's?"

You can find it here.

Thanks shapley, but this is exactly what we found.
What we are looking for is the name of the reviewer, his full quote, and exactly what Bartok's full reply was.
We suspect that this could be one of those comments that starts small and over a century grows way out of proportion.

Ah! Sorry. I could check my copy of Schonberg's "Lives of the Great Composers" when I get home. He has a chapter on Bartok. The quote seems to be well known amongst Bartok's biographers, so that would seem to be a good place to look. I'll try to remember to look later.
