83 degrees, UV index 6, relative humidity 69%, winds 5 to 10 mph. Partly cloudy. High surf advisory for the North Shore with waves to 25 feet. NOAA says some waves will reach 50 feet. When this happens they have to close the road up there as the wave will break and wash past the road. Today is 29 years of continuous eruption at Kilauea. The vog lowers the air quality.

Rochester, NY area weather recap for 2011:
68 inches of snow Jan-March
April broke rainfall record - 5.81 inches
March-May had a total 13.28 inches of rain - second soggiest spring on record
Sept, Oct and Nov - 2.9 degrees warmer than average - 9th warmest fall on record
snow from Oct - Dec., only 5.2 inches - had recorded 47 by this time last year!
40.48 inches total precip (rain + melted snow) for the year - average is 34.27!

We had a high of about 40 on Christmas - mostly temps above freezing during the week following as we traveled to Massachusetts. Almost 50 on New Years Eve, temps dropping all New Years day with rain.

Finally got some measurable snow Mon night-Tuesday - maybe 2-3 inches (but as they were predicting 9-12, we got lucky). Only got up to 14 Tuesday, it was 12 when I put the kids on the bus this morning, but is warming into the 20s now. I was going to run to the grocery store last night, but decided we could wait - not worth it in 8 degrees, with wind chill at -6! Sent the kids in to school with boots and snow pants today - too cold for them to take the kids out yesterday, hoping they get out today. Can't really complain, winter's running late around here!

Big waves on the North Shore. 30 feet or more. Last night waves washed over the road; it's now covered with sand. Lifeguards are keeping people out of the water as it's way too dangerous. There was a rescue today at Waimea Bay. 82 degrees.

Those waves are headed to CA as well. "Mavericks" is on alert for this year's competition. As for me, I am hoping that things settle by Sunday so I can go scuba diving in Monterey. We were fortunate that, during our visit there this Summer, vog seemed to be non-existent.

I had thought that, since the volcano is on the Eastern-most island, and the wind appears to be normally westerly. The islands have been moving westward, over a hotspot, for several millenia, such that the volcanic activity is nearly always on the Eastern side of the chain.

You're getting a new island, aren't you? I think it's supposed to surface in about 10,000 years. I saw that someone is selling property there already...

The trade winds blow west part of the year, then blow east. Lo'ihi is the name of the new island. It should be emerging above the sea in about ten thousand years or so.
