Desert Island Discs

Here's another oldie but (usually) a goodie. You are about to be marooned on a desert island. You have your cd player, your headphones and a good supply of batteries. With all that under your arm, you can carry only one recording. Which one, and why?<P>I'd take Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony". There are several good versions around, starting with Ernest Ansermet and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and going through to Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Philharmonia. <P>Why? Because it's light enough for me not to have to be "in the mood" for it. Any time is the right time. And it's heavy enough to repay repeated listening.<P>And it reminds me of why I wish to survive my desert island and will not just jump into the mouth of the nearest shark. It's upbeat.

that big pack of the complete Beethoven quartets. quantity over quality (though it does have some of the greatest music ever written).

OH ok. that's tough.<BR>the only ones I can think of are on double discs. Stravinski's "Rite of spring" with Abbado. Debussy orchestral music with Haitink. maybe Beethoven's 9th with Karajan or "La Boheme" or "Turandot" or "Madame Butterfly" with him? maybe Chopin's Ballades and Scherzi with Rubinstewin (60's)? or maybe Steve Reich music for 18 musicians 9ensemble modern)? I'll have to narrow this down grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........<BR>OK. karajan's Boheme.

These CD players today can usually play CDs that have MP3 files stored on them. I suggest you take your favorite boxed set of CDs, convert them to MP3 format, store them on a CD, and take them to your island. Please!<P>Regards,<BR>Tim B.<P>P.S. MP3... bah. I'll take audio quality over quantity any day.

i don't know about that, thorny. with the newer encoders available, if you do it right, mp3's sound pretty darned good. the trade off in file size certainly more than makes up for any decline in quality.

Ok - I have thought about this before and it's painful.<P>I have a list - I can't really decide on just one, but if I had to, it would be Shostakovich's Baba Yar Symphony - Lenny conducting<P>other's:<BR>Stravinsky - Rite of Spring (Lenny)<BR>Mahler - any symphony (either bruno walter or lenny)<BR>Any other Shostakovich symphony (lenny)
