The San Diego Opera opened their production of Don Carlo last Saturday night. All in all, it's a great show! All of the principals are phenomenal, particulary our Fillipo, played by Ferruccio Furlanetto(yes, I'm raving about a BASS!). His performance is probably the finest combination of good singing and acting I've ever seen. The San Diego Union-Tribune said the opera should be retitled King Phillip due to his performance. And it is grand opera on a grand scale. In one scene, there are approximately 200 people on stage.

I have a total of 3 costumes, and I take a step down the social ladder with every change:

First, I'm a courtier:

You make a very fine courtier/peasant/rabbleman. GC makes a wonderful cardinal. (How are those oversleeves constructed? Why isn't he posing with at least one arm stretched out so I can see how the oversleeve of the robe is constructed!!) I find myself yearning to become a second assistant flunky to the wardrobe mistress. Never mind all that singing and acting bushwah, I want to fondle the fabrics.

OT, congrats on a fabulous Don Carlo!

Live music for me lately includes:

* Mahler Second Symphony with the NSO, Cathedral Chorus, at the Kennedy Center with Kaplan conducting (fabulous, with the chorus and conducting particularly splendid)

* Salome at the Met (Mattila was amazing; I was fine until the very end, and then burst into tears as the audience burst into applause. Exceptionally excellent performance all the way around.)

* Sweeney Todd at the NYCO (I love this work, whether musical, supermusical, musical drama, or opera. Hadn't seen it since the 80s, then with Cariou and Lansbury; this performance was very fulfilling even with some cuts in it. The only thing I really noticed missing was the tooth-pulling scene, but to say I missed it [as in regretted its absence] would be too strong.)

After Salome and Sweeney Todd, I'm officially broke, but man, what a way to go!

Saw this year's touring production of Riverdance. It didn't stink. Excellent musicians and Michael Flatley had nothing on the featured male performer.

Got cast in "Fiddler" as the oldest sister---dinner theatre. I'm trying to keep a good attitude, but afraid the production will be pretty amateur.

Actually, that's the role I wanted. I think it's the best number in the whole show, and the most appropriate for shameless hams who can really only carry a tune. Oh well. Fruma Sarah.

conducted my "Songs of Praise" today at the sophomore composers' recital. went as well as I had hoped (almost, we composers are never satisfied).

Listening to live music as I type! It's 'Heritage" day at our school, and there are two acoustic guitarists from the Folk Center outside my office. I can't think of a better way to do end-of-year paperwork.

11 days to La Traviata at the SDO.
I should start getting SDO e-press releases on this next week. I am definitely looking forward to it. Never sat thru an opera with a tenor humming along (I can pray for humming, and not singing, yes?) in my ear.

The next day we subject the innocent people of Poway/ Scripps Ranch to a performance of the San Diego Chorale Arts Ensemble, doing madrigals etc and a requiem.
