How did you fall in love.......with classical music?

I'm amazed at how my musical tastes have changed, in just the last 2-3 years.

I've gone from pop,light rock, hard rock, classic rock, light metal and heavy metal.

My past favorites in the rock/pop/metal genres were Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osborne, AC/DC, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Beach Boys (Pet Sounds is awesome!), The Police, Supertramp and the list goes on....

Now it's Beethoven, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Bach, Berlios, Wendy Carlos, Chopin, and on and on and on!!

I started falling in love with classical music when I was 11 and started orchestra in school.

My Mum and Dad had four CD's that I'd never touched before because they were "old people music." (I thought.) Then one day, I discovered that I actually recognised some of the songs because we were playing them in class (simplified versions at first of course.) Said CD's were quickly confiscated by me (no one else listened to them) and still reside in my care. Once I could hum along to each part of the orchestra for all the songs on those four CD's, I decided I should probably begin to expand my collection.

I think the biggest thing was playing the music. I just LOVE to feel the music shake your whole body and soul as you play it. And there were so many good songs that we played. It's one of those things that just stick with you.

I've been addicted ever since.

i owe my love for classical music to my father. he has this collection of casette tapes in the early to late 80's when i was very young. associating the william tell overture to the lone ranger also got me interested. and i laugh very hard when a looney tunes cartoon features classical music. i remember rotfl when i saw bugs bunny (with elmer fudd) pulled off music from the barber of seville. several years ago, i started to go to performances, initially by the philippine philharmonic orchestra. i've even met someone who loves classical music and asked her to go with me in one of the performances. the last performance i went to was by the san miguel philharmonic orchestra. they played the pathetique symphony by tchaikovsky. with a russian conductor, the performance made me fall in love more with classical music. sadly, the philippine philharmonic orchestra seems to be having some financial problems, and some of their performers are going to the san miguel philharmonic orchestra. and the only classical music radio here in the philippines has reduced air time.

Perhaps this is a regionalism too, but I sometimes use the word songs when I mean tunes.

It was having enough classical music to select from to never bore me.
My story is one of regret: regret that I just embraced the genre in my early fifties and have so much catching up to do. I played bass and alto clarinets in high school but only well enough to get passing grades. Some popular pieces held my attention (the Beethoven piece played with the Huntley-Brinkley NBC Nightly News close credits, the 1812 overture, etc.) but never sucked me in. Even when I worked at WTMI (Miami) I was neutral toward the music. I wish I had spent more time with their announcers especially their PD, the late Allen Corbet.

Fast Forward about twenty years.
Two days after WTMI (Miami) changed to a dance format on New Years Eve, '01, I got XM Satellite Radio which has three classical streams plus one eclectic one, my then favorite. I soon found that the best tunes I heard on the eclectic stream were classical ones and I began spending more time with the classical ones. Then, XM added a folk stream, which I spent some time on, which was and is run by the same person who programs the vocal classical stream.

And thus, over a two year period, I went from listening to pop/rock/jazz to almost exclusively classical music. Vocal classical music, which always sounded alien to me, has become my favorite subgenre because the XM stream has so much more than basic opera, plus, the interviews make the singers come alive.

The thing about music is the capability of ear and mind to appreciate and enjoy it.
And I feel grateful to Whoever is up there for that gift - it gives my life and soul so much meaning.

But I did break into song! Just because the original composition didn't contain any words, it didn't stop me from singing right along anyway! I still can't figure out why people give me funny looks for doing it though. I sing a great cello part!

WVCG (Wonderful Voice of Coral Gables) had a good day signal but dropped by 13dB at night. What years are we talking about? I would guesstimate the early sixties. I think WVCG-FM, eventually WYOR, now WHQT, played some light semi-classics before they joined the Beautiful Music bandwagon for a few years (Every year they published a WYOR dial card/sticker featuring all the Miami FM stations with WYOR in bold). Somewhere around then, 93.1 became WAFM, WKAT-FM, WTMI. I personaly ignored all those stations, being a WQAM/WFUN type kid.
