I came soooo close to using "grind" to bump the other DC lunch bump thread. Thanks for filling in the gap!

We had one of our every-now-and-then meetings last Tuesday, and had one of the busboys take our picture. Image
From left to right, it's barfle (Jim), Stravinsky (Valerie), and Bones (Steve).

Although Owlice didn't show up, we took a picture of a parrot, just because it was around.

That picture looks like I'm trying to walk off with that parrot's perch under my arm. Other than that, what a classy looking group.

You look like a nice wholesome group of loyal americans, except for the parrot. He looks a tad suspicious. ;)

As I recall (barely) McCarthy thought everyone was a commie.

And I can testify that the most likely suspect of being a commie is the macaw. (although some of Strav's musical ideas are a bit radical...) ;)

:( Neither can I find a definition. :(

In reading extensively on McCarthyism once upon a bleak time ago, he and Roy Cohn used "fellow traveler" to indicate someone that was sympathetic to communists if not actually a member of the c.party. And then they used tht to claim that aiding and abetting was just as bad, and ruined a couple extra lives/careers thatway. "Pinko" was similar - you weren't quite Red, but you were headed that way.

Here's a more recent use of the terms to give some context:
"Fascinating stuff, the letter argued that Erap's extensive links with high profile Filipino-Chinese businessmen prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that he's a commie pinko. Jeez, I thought fellow traveler accusations went out with Whittaker Chambers and the John Birch society, or at least with the fall of the Berlin Wall. "

well - considering my political associations, i am nowhere near being a pinko fellow-traveler

very interesting stuff, though

so - can we assume there will be plenty of wedding pictures loaded to the site so we can see them, since we, the DCBBB lunch bunch can't get there???

Piq, when I was reading your post about pinko, I read it as PLINKO. I had images of commies playing Plinko with Bob Barker on the Price is Right. Yikes! I had to re-read it before I got it... long week.
