San Diego...as in Camp Pendleton???

We hear their guns all the time!!! And, we're about 50 miles inland from there. Sometimes our front door nearly rattles open from the booms.

SD in the Fall? Depends. Camp Pendleton is on/near the ocean so, there really isn't a bad time of year. Fall is probably the BEST time of year. Not much rain...thunderstorms stay near the mountains. The marine  layer starts to show up more often. Rather nice.

Pendleton? I couldn't think where in SD they did recruits - I know MCRD and NTC are no more. I rather miss seeing the USS Neversail from time to time.

You should be quite happy with the fall weather. Which won't arrive for another six or eight weeks, and by Idaho standards will never really arrive at all.

There is no snow. There is hardly ever frost. Hail sometimes happens in January, but it doesn't last more than five minutes when it hits the ground. It's an event and we go and stand out in the weather and admire the white stuff on the ground while it lasts.

You are extremely unlikely to get either heatstroke or frostbite.

If you time it right, you can come laugh at an Esperanza tryout audition. :D

You're gonna love it here.

The recruit training depot is right next to the airport. Right about in a diagonal line beteen Sea World and th Zoo, from what I gather from the map. I'm not sure if that's Camp Pendleton or not.

Weather sounds great. Looking forward to it. Maybe. :)

9 days to go! (If my medical waiver ever gets here  )

OK, I guess MCRD is still in business. That's the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. The Naval Training Center (NTC) was right next to it, with the USS Neversail,(which I believe to be one of the only commissioned plywood vessels ever built) located in the parking lot. It is, sadly, gone.

I work right across the bay, at North Island. That's where the Navy parks the large grey objects with the little airplanes sitting on the deck. I'll wave as I go across the bridge, twice daily. The San Diego opera is somewhere downtown - OT can give you more specific directions. I presume he knows where the theater is...

If you go to Tijuana, a few tips:

1. The Border Patrol and the CHP randomly check blood alcohol of returning young people. They seem to particularly check young military people. Word to the wise. The under-21 bunch needs a blood alcohol level of nothing to be safe.

2. The Tijuana intimate entertainers have a collection of pathogens second only to the working ladies of Bangkok. Avoid them. There are four or more incurables, and one of them is lethal. The Sandy Eggan intimate entertainers are not far behind, as they share many of the local customers...

3. The Trolley (and it actually looks like Mr. Rogers' little red trolley, all grown up) goes all the way to the border. The Orange line goes to the football stadium and the Mexico border, the blue line goes inland to El Cajon and Santee. Do not plan to drive across the border, you can go south without even slowing down, but going north on a weekend will cost you two hours in line at the Immigration crossing. You can walk down to the Avenida Revolucion shopping/restaurant/tourist district from the trolley drop, easily.

If you decide to stay north of the line, there's plenty to do here. For beaches, I'm fond of La Jolla Shores and Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. If you like critters, we have the Zoo (sundays the boys in uniform get in free, I believe) and the Wild Animal Park. That one's a real mind trip, but you can't get to it without motor transport. It's in the outback of Escondido. Know anybody in Escondido?

You have, sadly, missed the Quilt Show. <sniffle> And the Comicon. Life can be very hard, sometimes.

Oh, yes. I understand you will be pretty much incommunicado for some time, and then will be allowed to escape for short periods of time. Plan for poor public transportation connections, and then plan another hour for the inevitable screwups. They're quite serious by the "report back by" number. And San Diego busses do NOT run in the middle of the night. Your immediate supervisor will make an example of the first screwup. Don't be him. (This last courtesy of a retired Master Gunny Sargeant with whom I work.)

He also said to remind you that the stuff between your ears and behind your eyes belongs to you. Everything else is the property of the Corps. Keep your head down, argue with nothing, volunteer for nothing, go along with all the OO-rah nonsense, it's temporary.

Keep a sense of humor and you'll have a wonderful time.

Hi Selma, the USS Neversail is still there as of a few days ago, but the section of RTC around it where I went to boot is nothing but graded dirt now.

1st, I have my opinion re Tijuana: don't bother. I've been to a few Mexican border towns, including TJ, and IMO they are nothing but money sieves that are ptoential big trouble.

Forget Tijuana....go further down, at least Rosarito. Go to a dance club or a sports bar on the beach; you can build a campfire on the beach and stay up all night. Try to go with someone who speaks Spanish (although everyone probably speaks English down there). You won't get off base if you're in boot camp, you'll have to wait for a weekend when you're in Camp Pendleton doing your MOS training (Military Occupation) after bootcamp, and it will probably not be music (sorry dude). Don't act too stupid, the haircut gives you away.

Wow. Thanks again for everything. I must confess that I'm quite anti-social. I've never done the typical stupid teenage things like getting drunk, smoking whatever can be wrapped in cigarette paper, (though it is useful for getting water out of toneholes...) and all that nonsense. You have nothing to worry about.
The Gunny that auditioned me yesterday told me that I will be issued a clarinet when I get there, so most of my free time will be consumed by that. I need to learn all my minor scales (natural, harmonic, melodic) before I go to the School of Music. I learned about them in music theory last year, but never played them.

I'm one of the good guys. Last year as a college freshman, I served on the judicial council for the dorms, so I was actually part of a board that punished people who smoked pot, etc.

Thanks again all.

Don't be too antisocial, you'll only get worse with age. Get to know people and enjoy their company. It's OK not to do "stupid teenage things" but it is better to have experienced something and then decide to say no to it than to never have the experience and reject it Everything with limits of course; I wouldn't do anything that puts myself or others in danger.
Congratulations on joining an elite force. It's great that you can do music right away.

If you were on the judicial council and punished people.....then get ready to get punished this time around. Take everything lightheartedly. If they get in your face, razz them :p

experiment report: so I went to the river and stuck my head in it. I kept it in there for a while and it started becoming uncomfortable, but I stuck on. i strted seeing red, black, and other colors. but all that was just losing oxygen it's not dying. then I dies it's just a little tingling feeling. then I was like hovering over my body for a while then I sorta bumped back to ground and went home and posted on the board. people can't see me so that's good. I can now leave the toilet seat up and no one knows who did it. my family isn't creating a big fuss. they just dumped my body in the river. they also called the police. sometimes the keys of the keyboard don't respond cuz my figers ar slihtly les substantial. I'll update you more about this when I know more. all in all it's not very interesting being dead. but i guess I can play some real good pranks on people now cuz I'm invisible.

Hmmmm------. Spelling does not improve after death. I'll make a note of that. Do tell us more about the other world when you get a chance. How's the music situation?

y'know I think a different part of me went to another world cuz this part stayed here. If i were in the other world I wuldnt be able to post. i have spelling mistakes because there fungers aren't very resistant so sometimes instead of the fingers pressing the keys the keys pres the fingers. and therefor some leters are mising.

Camp Pendleton is about an hour up the coast from San Diego, depending on traffic. It's a very large Marine base, and as I ponder the coming winter in the DC area (predicted by the Farmer's Almanac as being a severe one), I'm almost envious. I learned long ago not to envy anyone in any form of military basic training, but, as has been noted, it's temporary. That doesn't mean you can sleep through it - it will require your full attention - but do what you're told (no matter how stupid you think it is!), don't stand out either in front or behind in anything you possibly can avoid, and you'll be a Marine before you know it.

Some of it will be fun, much will be difficult, and parts of it will make you regret your birth, but only temporarily. I don't know what happens in Marine boot camp, but I found the gas training and the 28-mile hike to be the two toughest days. But I lived to tell about it, so can you (in spite of what your opinion at any one time may be).

Didn't you see Ghost and the Sixth Sense. You were supposed to go to the light but somehow you missed the train in your little experiment. Do you "see dead people" now. Maybe you could try to contact some dead composers and give us some feedback on a musical afterlife....are they still composing? Did Schubert finish the 8th? Can Ludwig hear now? Did Holst write "Earth"? How 'bout Clara Schumann? Give us the skinny on the world hereafter
