Don Knotts and Dennis Weaver, RIP

Postby Shapley » Mon Feb 27, 2006 5:45 pm

Don Knotts and Dennis Weaver, both 81, have passed away in the past few days.

Looks like a bad week to be an ex-law enforcement sidekick.

Seriously, may they rest in peace.

I remember Don Knotts from the old Steve Allen Show in the 1950s. His Y.B. Witherspoon skit was hilarious, even to my parents.

I also remember Dennis Weaver in Duel in the early 1970s. I think it was the first time I had seen him in a non-doofus role, and was impressed.

We've lost a couple of the good ones, for sure.

Lets not forget Darrin McGavin, who also passed this weekend. I loved Night Stalker.

PSIP,

Yes, I had not read that Darren McGaven died until last night, so I hadn't included him in the list. I just love A Christmas Story, and I don't think anyone else could have played the role as well as he did.

Barfle, I have a VCR tape of Duel, Stephen Spielberg's first movie. I liked that movie, too.

Darren McGavin was an amazing actor: lead, second banana, comedy, serious, hero, villain. He was always right for the part. I don't know how many people remember Man With a Golden Arm. He (Antek) was the perfect villain, keeping Frank Sinatra (Frankie Machine) on drugs. The movie also vaulted Elmer Bernstein's status to first class.

Shos,

I had forgotten he was in that movie. I've not seen it in ages.
