Almost all the riding I've done has been bareback -- and barefoot too, usually. Usually I ride because I need to outrun some four-legged critter that's gotten out of the fence, and I just find it to be a pain to saddle up. The way I have it figured is if you're goin to ride all day or do any roping you want a Western saddle. If you're going for speed you want an English saddle -- I'll never forget flying through the air and plowing into the dirt face and chest first as a result of galloping bareback on an Arabian mare. If your a kid, or just planning to ride leisurely (or in a terrible hurry), bareback works fine. The one thing about riding bareback is it's not a good idea to try roping while riding bareback. Take it from me: you're not hooked on real good.
Oh, ah, Peter, do you get it now?
-- EJA
