Studio Mysteries

Postby BenODen » Mon Jun 02, 2003 3:55 pm

Hi Nicole,

I've been watching the web cam today, and looked at the studio tour, and I'm confused about something. I know I could just write to requests, but this might interest all the techies here. If it's not top secret, that is. *grin*

Why are there more CDs than I could shake a stick at on the back wall when you have 20GB of digital music in your computer? Is it just too much music to fit into the computers? (That's a LOT of music, if so!)

Let the music Play! Totally enjoying b.com!

We don't play all our music from the computers. Honestly, I never play music from our Vault system, I always play it from CD. We only put the most popular pieces in our Vault system and that doesn't even come close to our entire library. On Air we have the option of using the Vault or CD, I use CD's only. I feel I have a larger variety to pick from, more performers, styles etc. to pick when I use the CD library.

Cool, thanks. I guess that makes sense! 20Gb sounds like a lot, but you do the math, and uncompressed, it's only 30 cds. If you compress it up some, and you get to 300, if you compress it up to the quality that we get in the stream, maybe there's room for 2,000ish, but I take it that's not the way it's done!

I love the technical details! (Second to the music of course!) For instance, it looks like there's either a 0:45 to 1:00 delay on the music, or you record your transitions before they actually happen, since I see you talking on the web cam before the song even ends on the stream. Either way, tricky, tricky. *GRIN*

The delay is because of you! The more listeners we have online the longer the delay. If you find the delay longer one day - it's just because our numbers are up.

Does this mean that if enough people listen, that we will be seeing tomorrow what you were doing today?

Have we broken the theory for time travel?

Nicole,

Is this delay between camera and music related to the stuttering of the stream where you hear the same 15 or 20 seconds of music multiple times? I heard the beginning of 'Riders on the Storm' 4 or 5 times before it finally moved on. I've been trying to figure out the technical details on how it helps bandwidth to delay the music, since everybody needs the same amount of data streaming in to get the music...

Help! I can't get out of the box!

The camera and stream are independent of each other. They are not connected in any way. The camera is in more real time then the stream. The stream is delayed due to log on listeners and the camera refreshes every 10-sec.

As for your stuttering, try adjusting your buffering settings on your computer.
