I agree! Rossini's pretty tough to perform with all the "ups and downs" but Horne does it so well.

Hi Marye-

Do you have an suggestions for the Beethoven Vocal Library? Our selections is kind of small and there are several of you with a better understanding of vocal recordings. I'd love some suggestions on CD's we may want to add to the Beethoven Wish List?

Thanks!

Hey OT and Marye-

What do you think of Caruso? I enjoy his voice but the recordings I have are pretty bad. Can you suggest any good remasters? Or favorites you know of?

there are no good remasters of Caruso. the ones that reduce the hiss sound ugly (and unauthentic) and those that aren't ugly have more hiss than music. a singer who is not known enough compared to his quality is Fritz Wunderlich. he died very toung (in his 30's I think) in a accident so he's not known enough. the other great singers you probably don't need me to tell you about. are you looking for opera recording suggestions or more like excerpts CD's?
I know the question was directed to Marye but i think IU can also help (my arrogant self... I don't have any other).

Y.R.H.,

My voice teacher just loaned me a tape he'd made of a two-CD set of Caruso that sounded better than anything I'd heard yet. I'm going to try to get the CD's and then I'll pass it on.

BTW, my Russian voice teacher thinks a lot can be learned from listening to Caruso. He said that you can tell what he's doing to acheive his sound more so than most other tenors.

Yea yea, and keep dropping things here (as well?) I enjoy reading the suggestions and raves, even if I don't have the knowledge myself.

does Kathleen Battle have... wow... beautiful choice Nicole Marie...

What has happened to Kathleen Battle? I haven't heard about her in years. I think she had been "let go" by the Met... but I could be making that up... Anyone?

Battle IS a Diva!! Yes, she was let go by the MET. Her demands were so over the top and her behavior was so terrible towards the staff and other singers that the MET let her go. She is still recording, just turned 50 and taking the stage once in a while.

When it comes to sopranos, only Tony and Uncle Junior hold a candle to Kathleen's reputation for having a temper.

But when she sings, it's like an angel. She might even be able to do a Revenge Aria that I would accept.

Nahh, not even she can do that, but she really has a magnificent voice. I'm glad I don't have to work with her, though.

Don't know how current this request still is but here are some thoughts..
Personally, I have no problems listening to the early recordings and can appreciate and speculate on what better technology would have done to his sound..

Label: Rca
Catalog: #69766
Audio CD (February 8, 2000)
ASIN: B000031WTO
This is an attempt RCA made four years ago to clean up some vocal tracks and add a modern orchestra accompaniment. It works rather well IMO. I only wish they'd done more of his available catalog this way.

There are a couple of decent Wunderlich compilations:

Label: Hanssler Classics
Catalog: #93003
Audio CD (September 26, 2000)
ASIN: B00004Z3YL

Label: Emi Classics
Catalog: #62993
Audio CD (July 1, 1991)
Number of Discs: 3
ASIN: B000002S0N

You can sample some or all of these by going to amazon, clicking the 'more information' link, and paging down.
