Why I don't sing in public:

Although I like to sing along to the radio when I'm alone in the car, I find that I often break into coughing fits while doing so. That seems as though it would tend to prevent me from much of a career as a performer.

Also, there are notes I simply can't hit reliably. It's not that I don't know what they are, but that crack into falsetto leaves a gap that I don't know how to fill. I recall a thread some time back where people were commenting about nailing The Star Spangled Banner, and it was generally acknowledged that "the rocket's red glare" isn't something everyone can actually hit. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. The fact that I'm not confident about it means that I'll sing with the rest of the crowd at the ball game, but not as a performer.

I came. I auditioned. I left.

I had my 2004 SDO audition about 20 minutes ago. I feel it went about the way I expected. Not perfect, but certainly better than the last two, so I'm pleased. Now we'll see if they are. I sang the Flower Song first, and did very well until the las long phrase, and blew a high note. One of the panel (our union rep), closed her eyes and had a serene little smile for most of it, so I took that as a good sign. I didn't have to sing all of Nessun Dorma, lost it on a couple of high A's, but otherwise did fine.

then again that panel lady might have closed her eyes from suffering and smiled consolingly at your pathetic attempts at singing. LOL. j/k. (I always expect the worst) but of course that is not possible in your case!

Hi B O'D,

Alas, it's only middle A. When I'm doing things right, it's no problem, but I got nervous (musical acrophobia: fear of high notes - not a good condidtion for tenors or sopranos), and lost my support for a couple of notes. Otherwise, my placement and expression were pretty durn good, IMHO. At least I think I wowed 'em a little at the start, and it's those first impressions.....
