It's called spalling. The moisture trapped inside the marble boils and blows the top layer off the marble.

The inside of the new cathedral is firmly 1950's modern. In place of the massive stone pillars of old cathedrals, it has narrow tapering concrete pillars.It doesnt have arched side aisles, because it doesnt need the arches to have that high ceiling. The walls are lined with tall narrow stained glass windows, and one magnificent large window which we photographed, but which apparently didnt come out. The back of the nave is clear glass, so that the ruins can be seen clearly from within the new building. The whole new thing is clean and linear inside, except for the sculpture above the choir stalls. I think, in a different setting, that sculpture would be beautiful instead of jarring. Its intended to be flocks of doves rising, tho OT is right - the three pointed abstract "dove" looks a lot like a chair base.

The thing about the bombing is that the Germans tried to wipe out an entire city in one night, and had they stuck with it a couple hours longer, its thought they would have succeeded. I was told by one resident that it gave rise to the term "to coventry", meaning to wipe out. I havent heard it elsewhere.

The city is patched here and there with old tudor style buildings (authentic) interspersed with the modern that replaced the ones damaged in the air-raid.

Another term "Sent To Coventry", meaning that a person is punised by being completely ignored no one speaks to the person concerned. It usually happens in prison or the workplace if a person has been dishonest, blacklegged a strike action by the union or informed on a colleague, to the management.

IMHO, this is very cruel, it can make the one concerned, depressed, suicidal and mentaly unstable.

I have to sight read a concert Sunday morning.

The genius' decided to schedule the rehearsal for Saturday night. I told them weeks ago that I could not rehearse after 6pm this saturday. Still they setup a rehearsal and now want to know why I can't make it......

Oh well, we shall see what happens....

Bureaucratic advice for future dealings with genius rehearsal schedulers - give it to 'em in writing, attach a receipt form, insist that recipient of memo initial receipt.

If they have e-mail, set your transmittal to generate a read receipt.

For anyone who's interested, the audition was at least an improvement over last year's. The room they were held in had a small stage where we were instructed to sing from. For me, I think it helped make it feel more like a performance, net result less nervous.

I had a lesson with the chorus master the next morning, and his statement was, "there were some beautiful moments." I'll take that as a positive, especially since I didn't need to be told about the couple of stinkers that occured.
