Hey, we all have "Stinker" moments.
Just need to keep going when that happens as if nothing happened.

I Played a service yesterday. Could not warm up as the choir was rehearsing. Had to play the gig cold. First work was baroque that I played on an Eb Trumpet Went very well. The other brass players looked at me and said how did you do that?

Hi TM,

It will take 2-6 weeks before I receive a contract or a "so sorry". I feel somewhat safe about getting a contract. It will most likely be for Carmen(Shos, you really ought to come to Sandy Eggo now) and Lucia di Lammermoor.

At long last, resumption of the travelogue....

At this point, we boarded a plane and flew to Dublin for the second week of the choir tour. I didn't know Dublin was famous for its doors, and since I was copying Haggis and pursuing a door theme for my photos, I kinda went nuts in Dublin. That being the case, I think I'll go off the timetable and post some of the more interesting doors we saw, and a sampling of the colors to be found in Georgian Dublin.

The first place we encountered interesting doors was in Durham. These were at Durham Castle:

The next two are from Holy Trinity church in Coventry. The first is an outside door, and the second is a pair of door inside. The plaque to the left of the left door talks about the north porch, to which that door leads, having been built in 1215!

The next three are from Christchurch, Dublin. I really dig the ornate hinges crafted on some of these doors.

And now, the famous Georgian doors in Dublin. Our Irish bus driver explained the tradition rose out of the need for residents to be able to easily find their door after a long Saturday evening at the pub.

Anothe fine example of ornate hinges, this at Ripon Cathedral. Notice the way the bottom of the door is contoured to the floor.

These doors are on the exterior of Romsey Abbey, a Norman abbey in southern England. The door on the left no longer has hinges attached to it,and it looked like it has been that way for hundreds of years.

This door is in York, the street entrance to Monk's Gate on the old city wall. That door is supposed to be kept open, so I stationed a friend on the other side while I closed it long enough to photgraph it.

I would think they would advise a bit quicker since you have already been working for the organization.

I can console myself only in that there are others in the chorus who've been members for >30 years who have to wait just as long as I do.

It used to be worse when I lived in Temecula(~60 mi from the SDO). Sometimes my contract wouldn't show up for as long as a week after everyone else got theirs. I'd see someone in that period, and they'd ask me what shows I got, I'd tell them I didn't get a contract yet, and they'd look at me with pity, thinking I probably didn't get hired, but not wanting to say so. Woulda been funny if not so pathetric.

My voice teacher the chorus master didn't say one way or the other when I saw him the next morning, but I think he would've told me right away if I wasn't going to get a contract.

Hey, if I didn't, it would suck missing the money, but I'd get a whole bunch of evenings and weekends with my family in the trade.

I know. It's a tough business and you have to have a hard exterior. I've played great auditions but not gotten the gig as they were looking for a different sound. Nothing you can do with that.
This is why I do my best to ignore my surroundings when playing and lose myself in making music.

Oh yeah. You should've seen me after my first audition with the present chorus master. I was in the middle of singing my second piece, having just done a good job on E lucevan le stelle, feeling great about the performance I was putting in, and he stops me with one of those New York audition deadpan-faced, "Thank you, I've heard enough"'s(I sang well enough he later asked me if I was sure I wasn;t a first tenor). You know that kind of mild disgust look they get on their faces?

At that time, I'd been told I'd get notification in two weeks. It took five. I was a nervous wreck in the meantime.

However, I did get three shows that season.

I got my SDO contract today, and it turned out I was right, my audition didn't suck after all!

I got three shows: Lucia di Lammermoor, Carmen, and The Magic Flute,in Italian, French, and German, respectively.
