Does anyone read? Part II

Just finished the Da Vinci Code. Wow! Great book and I suggest everyone give it a shot. (I knew there was a reason I believed in Goddess worship.) But my question is has anyone read any other books extending on this topic? Does any one have a recommendation to follow up on the topics addressed in the Da Vinci Code?

I saw the book yesterday in a warehouse membership club. Even though it is marked down to $14.something that's still pretty hefty for me to buy a book. But I read the premise and it sounds very interesting. Looking forward to it coming out in paperback.

I'm determined to get people reading...

I'm re-reading Lenny Bruce's How to Talk Dirty and Influence People for the 17th time. Has anyone else read it? What do you think? Also I'd love some other suggestions on Bruce. I heard the movie of Bruce, I think it was Hoffman who played him, is amazing. Has anyone seen it?

I saw Leny starring Dustin Hoffman and Valerie Perrine. Funny you should mention it, because I was just thinking about the movie last night. It came out in late '74 or early '75, and I thought it was a pretty darn good flic. It showed how someone can create a niche, dominate that niche, but have that success destroy him.

It just goes to show you who you shouldn't refer to as a bleep-bleeper.

You know what? I looked up "The DaVinci Code" on the internet and went to the official web site. After browsing it I am really intrigued now, so the $14.something will be leaving my pocket shortly.

As for more fun reading, there is a Michael Crichton book, now in paperback, called "Prey". I started it last night and almost could not put it down. I love his books, and have read nearly every one twice.

Lenny Bruce's book was also portrayed in a 90's teen "rage against the government" flick, called Pump Up the Volume. That book was the main character's inspiration for the Pirate Radio theme in the movie. Must be a real compelling book.

Hey Devin - That movie is what got me interested in Lenny. I'm a huge fan of the movie and picked up the book after I saw it. This was back in 90/91? Great movie.

Hmm....Tim,

I bought Da Vinci Code, read it and thought... ok thriller, not great writing. Interesting stuff about Da Vinci that I might look into. I don't think I would go out of my way to read any more by this author, though. Likely to be a movie, wouldn't you say?

Funny you should say that, yes it's being made into a movie. I had the same feelings about the book. The writing was not great, I skipped through the "and then they did this..." blah and zeroed in on the Da Vinci/goddess/church angle. That's what blew me away.

A movie... should not be surprised. Close to casting yet? or still in talks...

Maybe that read as sexist, but I didn't mean to be. Just wanted to imply that some authors appeal to men more than women, and vice versa. I have yet to read a Jackie Collins or Barbara Cartland novel. And I have yet to meet a woman who likes Clive Cussler novels. But certainly everyone is free to read what appeals to them.

Uhh.. I don't like Jackie or Barbara. I just think the authors writing style is light and bored me, it's not because he's a man.

Marye I did find a lot on Mary! But I also went into this book knowing alot on the history of women. The info on Mary was new to me. I'm also very familiar with the Goddess worship practices. The Amazon's have always been an interest of mine and Eleanor of Aquitaine is of great interest to me. She practiced many of the Goddess worship ways. Her grandfather is known as the first troubadour so the lands Eleanor governed, practiced the balance of men and women as equals discussed in the book. Eleanor would face tons of crap through life because she felt both sexes were equal. The church always kept an eye on her because of this. There is a great book by Alison Weir that gives the history of Eleanor.

I also went to an all women's college for several years (here come the comments) so the world history I have learned is from the view of women. We've done great things over time, to bad history is written by the "winners". Although I wouldn't call us loosers.

Ooh.... Tim... I see little difference between a Clive Cussler and a Jackie Collins novel. Formula writers, Formula stories.

And if you haven't met a woman who enjoys reading an adventure tale ... then, you have now, I am pleased to meet you. The Horatio Hornblower series was one of my favourites.
