Pipe Organ Music

Oberlin College in Ohio used to have a weekend long Bach festival, inviting prominent organists from miles around, to play their magnificent pipe organ.

To sit in that auditorium was to melt! I can't describe it. Truly awesome!

Is there such a thing around here?

In CT, our best organs are in churches. CT has some of the oldest organs in the country since most date back to the building of the churches they are located in. The St Peters Church in New Britian hosts a organ concert the second Monday of each month and they have larger organ concerts through out the season: http://organisten.de/oberlinger/stpeter/#P

A MUST SEE is the organ at the Cathdral of St Jospeh's in Hartford. That organ is massive and with a cost of over $3 million the sound is out of this world! They host several concerts each year. Here is the season: http://www.cathedralofsaintjoseph.com/music.html

The Hartt School has a program of Study for the Organ. The students in this department are required to perform concerts and the usually use the Hartt School organ or the organ at the Unitarian church on Bloomfield Ave (right next to the Hartt School). Here in Sandy Eggo, we have a wonderful outdoor organ at Balboa Park. Free concerts are given every Sunday afternoon from 2-3pm, and there is a summer evening concert series, usually two months long, every week, where programs are given by guest organists. Additionally, there are holiday and special event concerts, such as silent film nights, where the organ is played as accompaniment to a silent film.

The organ was built in 1915 and donated by John D. Spreckels, as part of the park built for the 1915 World Exposition. It was orginally stipulated that the organ was for the enjoyment of the citizens of San Diego, and all concerts given would be free. There is currently a society for the preservation and promotion of the organ. This is their website.

I feel this is one of San Diego's cultural treasures, and anyone visiting should check it out.

The Kennedy Center has a pretty impressive pipe organ in it. The only time I've heard it was for the Saint-Saens, but it can blast.

I wondered about those folks up there sitting just in front of the big pipes.

I also recall about 20 years ago there was a brief fad of pipe organs being installed in Pizza joints in Orange County, CA. Too bad it didn't last very long.

And then there's my record collection. It's buried in a box (still no shelves in my "library") but I have an LP by a guy who built a pipe organ in his basement. There's a diagram of the layout on the back of the cover, including the furnace. It seems like his name is Ken Barry, but there may be some synapses shorting out on that bit of information.

Could it be that the King of Musical Instruments is staging a comeback?
The day after my original post, here in Hartford, our beloved Beethoven Radio played a commercial for the Bushnell having a performance of the Hartford Symphony with glorious Organ performances of Saint Saens on 7 and 8 May.
You can bet your sweet - - - DW and I and another couple are going!!
