Crate training advice: whenever you tell Sam to go to his crate, give him a cookie when he gets in there. This way he'll equate crate with cookie.

A friend suggested that when we were potty training our dog, tell the pup "do your business" or some such phrase whenever they start going. We told Tanda that over and over and then got all gooshie "what a goooood dog" when she went. Why? Cuz now she'll go on cue. VERY handy when we want to crate her for a while, or when we're going to be gone.

THE BIGGEST bit of advice -- google a boxer email list. I am on a list for Tanda's breed and they have become good friends over the years.

That's Tanda posing as me in my profile. She was 8 this month, tho' she was only 2 in the photo. I reluctantly admit that she is a Bouvier des Flandres -- the breed is a well-kept secret and we like it that way. Sort of protecting the integrity of the breed and all that.

My Dog Loves My Volvo . . .
. . .but not in a good way. For some reason he has become obsessed with getting in cars. He jumps through open windows and he has learned how to open the door handles on several kinds of cars. He's eleven, so never say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. At first it was, "isn't that cute, he's laying in the car." but he did leave a few scratches getting in to my mother-in-law's car. So we started closing every window and getting our guests to park in the street where he can't roam. Then he tried to get in my Volvo 850 through the engine compartment.

He's no dummy and has shown some problem solving ability before, so in a perverse way, I could appreciate this attempt.

We thought maybe his anxiety was due to a loose tooth that had developed, so we had it pulled last week. Then Saturday night his obsession took an ugly turn.


While we were eating a nice dinner just inside the garage door, he tried to climb through the sunroof of the 850, then he learned how to open the 850 door handle and got in and munched on the door panels. The blood you see is where he injured the empty tooth socket while gnawing. He wasn't trapped, the door he broke into was still open. We suspect he was just angry that we got his leash out before dinner but didn't take him for a walk right away. My wife was ready to kill him on the spot. We now lock all the doors all the time and he has taken to destroying the trim trying to get in the cars. I'm at the end of my rope. I love the little guy, but I can't have my cars being destroyed. How do you cure an anxious dog who is obsessed with breaking in cars? I don't want to put him to sleep.

Our dog has/had severe separation aniexty...

She chewed up my wife's wallet, my hand held micro cassette recorder and the TV remote.

It did not solve all anxiety but she stopped chewing things up around the house.

My dog is a rawhide-chewing machine. We could never leave him alone with a piece of rawhide; he would eat himself into an intestinal blockage.

My vet thinks the anxiety is old age, but this has come on very suddenly. It seems to have subsided suddenly too as he hasn’t tried to get in a car for days. He has also become deathly afraid of shrill noises, turning into a quivering mass of jelly. I’m wondering if he isn’t having ear problems that he is seeking relief inside the cars.

Our dog, a Miniature Pinchser, would get up on a kitchen counter and mess things up if she was left alone without being caged. She would do this even when we are home but out in the yard and she was left alone inside. Mind you, she is only about 10 inch tall to withers and weighs 8 pounds. Needless to say, she is kept in a cage when everyone is gone. She can climb up a chain link fence. Min Pins are fun dogs but I know they are not for everyone. They are mischievous but entertaining.

He was rescued from an abusive situration as a pup.

He'd probably eat the drugs to get wasted.

Sounds like there is something else here other than aniexty. You may be right there is an ear problem with what you said earlier.

Our dog can't stand shrill or loud noises either. She sticks her head under her pillow or goes to the other room.....

Our oldest dog Bear used to eat everything! The couch, shoes, bed pillows. He had horrible anxiety and would flip out anytime we left. Our vet recommended getting another dog, someone for him to hang with during the day. So we adopted Vida and it worked! Bear and Vida play together all day with their toys and the new couch we had to buy has been saved.

If your dog has anxiety, maybe they just need a buddy to play with?

Sudden dramatic onset sounds like it could be related to an infection. Babies chew/gnaw to relieve earpain. I wonder if your dog has an ear infection?

Prozac works on dogs.

If he didnt get an intestinal blockage from eating your car door liners, I'd guess rawhide poses no challenge to that gut.

We've been giving him antibiotics since the tooth was pulled.

He didn't actually eat the panels; he just shredded 'em and left 'em strewn around the car.

The other thing we've noticed recently is he walks around with his tail tucked between his legs most of the time and he keeps his ears flat. If you know shepherds, they normally have the ears at full-upright alert at all times (even when sleeping, to our amusement) and walk with the tail up. Time for another visit witht the vet and a probable full round of x-rays. $$$$$

SB, we need an updated pic of Sam, these are over a month old.

My dog tore a screen off the outside our house when we were away, but no other damage since the car doors. He just isn't looking right. His eyes are bulging.
