New Music (new to you)

I purchased a terrific cd last night and thought it might be worth it to start a new thread for music that's new to you. . .that way others can appreciate new music too.

Last night I purchased my third Yo-Yo Ma cd (I already have the Bach suites and the Silk Road Journies). I purchased Classic Yo-Yo last night, and absolutely adore it. I haven't decided which cd will be my next purchase, but as I already have the soundtrack to Master and Commander. . .who knows.

Anyone else buy new (to them) music recently?

Duncan is the classic yo-yo, but the "Silver Bullet 2" by Tom Kuhn represents the epitome of yo-yos

My latest music purchase is a CD of American music, played on Davy Crockett's fiddle. I purchased it at the Colonial Williamsburg (VA) gift shop.

Among other tunes, it has the Star Spangled Banner on it. I sent Dan a copy about a month ago. You may have heard it some noontime.

I just got a Naxos CD of 3 Jewish tone poems. One was by Aaron Avshalomov, father of Jacob Avshalomov. Another was by a guy named Meyerowitz: Midrash Esther. The third was by a woman named Silver. It was for strings, and somewhat dissonant. The other 2 reminded me of Bloch's music. Never heard of this music, but glad I got it.

There's some mean fiddlin' on there, esp. her cover of Orange Blossom Special.

I'm finding Hummel very interesting at the moment. I came across him first in a collection of trumpet concertos, and was very impressed with his. Now I have some piano concertos as well. They're good listening.

I think it was Mr. Hummel's very bad luck to be a contemporary of Beethoven. Even worse than Salieri & Mozart.

Neither had I, except that Aaron was Jacob Avshalamov's father. I do have an unusually named piece by Jacob: The Taking of Tung Kuan. The family spent years in China. They settled in Oregon later in life.

Silver and Meyerowitz were totally new to me.

No, it wasn't a stubbing or a stabbing, it was a shirting! And, for the life of me, I don't know what those silly people are doing out on a freeway full of speeding cars(okay, we're in SoCal, parked cars), messing around with shirts ! It just doesn't make any sense!
