There is a road called the Akatarawa Road that wends its way from Upper Hutt to Waikanae at the bottom of the North Island. It has a cliff all the way along one side, and a precipice all the way along the other, and no guard rails. I went along it once in a Mazda 626, which is'nt a big car thank goodness. On the way, I met an impatient man who drove his car up on to a ridge of asphalt at the very edge of the precipice, and clipped my door mirror on his way past. He made it, which was just as well as I wouldn't have wanted to do the mountaineering required to rescue him if he'd gone over.
I now drive a bigger car, and I flatly refuse to use that road.
