I'm surprised nobody else has commented on this, because I know HRH thinks Sarah Brightman is simply dreadful. If memory serves, OT feels quite the same way.

But I like a lot of what she does, her rendition of Nessun Dorma not withstanding.

Sacrilege, pure and simple. ND is a tenor only song. no if's and's or but's. Especially since it's a love song to a princess.

It's a style thing. Some things that Brightman does, in her singing technique, constitute major faults in classical voice training. (Particularly the way she slides up and down from one note to the next!) Very common in country, fairly common in pop and musical theater, frowned upon in opera. I'd rather listen to Brightman than, say Celine Dion.

Actually, Dion's singing works very well in Nashville. Brightman might try that venue, if she could master the repertoire.

Both SB and CD manufacture their vibrati(vibratoes?), as opposed to a natural vibrato that comes from correct vocal technique. They're easy to identify, because their vibrati sound like fluctuations in ptich rather than fluctuations in air flow. Additionally they both wobble their jaw in the process - doesn't happen when it's being done correctly.

The glissandi(sldiing up and down, aka scooping and swooping) can either be a stylistic improvisation, or a copout because they can't get to where they're going musically any other way. To my ear, I'd swear I could tell the difference. I find the former acceptable and the latter detestable.
