Tone Poems

What is your favorite leap-motive? (because thats what it sounds like and i cant spell it)

Hahahahaha.. yes I meant leitmotif. I think the first time I heard it though - back in High School maybe - I heard it as "leap motive" so that has stuck with me (thinking I am very fond of German machinery but not their language)

Ah yes I read that link and thank you...but I don’t get combining tone poems and overtures together, is there a connection? I thought an overture was a sort of Readers Digest condensed version of the play, opera, and symphony… a teaser so to speak. Obviously a tone poem is a musical painting. So tell please!!!

Don’t’ forget that I am probably the most amateur here. I don’t even play anything. I’m just a regular guy who likes to listen... no musical experience at all.

There are different kinds of overtures. Opera overtures, for example, introduce the drama and set a tone for the coming events. Concert overtures are simply pieces that were originally designed as the opening pieces for concerts. Ceremonial overtures are designed to be played at a special affair. Perhaps the best known, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, is a ceremonial overture to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812. It's a standalone piece and could have easily been called a tone poem.

Take that explanation from another amateur guy who can't play anything (well) either and who also just likes to listen.

You amateur guys who can't play anything(well) often have a vastly more encyclopedic knowledge of classical music than those of us who not only play, but get paid to do it, so don't seel yourself short. I've learned an amazing amount since I starting posting here.

Me too. May not know squat but I know what I like and write accordingly.

Heck, if they'll accept someone like me here, they won't have a problem with you. I'm self-taught, can't play anything much more complicated than a radio, and think Mozart should be rated below Leroy Anderson (who was NOT a classical composer).

I've attended quite a few performances, and when they're avaliable, I like to hear the pre-concert lectures, but my last formal class in music was in the seventh grade, when Eisenhower was President. I did take a class in appreciating ballet, but the teacher just played tapes I already owned, so I don't count that, and a biography of Lenny, but they didn't do much digging into the music, so I don't count that, either.
