The great photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, was also insulted by "amateur" vs. "professional". He thought photgraphing for the love of photography was much greater motivation than photographing for money. He also thought the best amateurs were better than the best professionals. That seems to be true in ice skating, for example.

A very interesting love affair between he and O'keefe. A true southwestern novel is in it somewhere.. I so admire people who go with the winds.

Stieglitz loved photographing O'Keeffe's body and hands. Her admiration for him as mentor knew no bounds. He was much older than she, yet they decided to marry. It worked for a while, but her art suffered from the situation. She was suffocated by the relationship, even in the summers, when they vacationed at Lake George (with his friends and family). In 1927 (or 1928) she broke away after being invited to New Mexico by an old friend. From then on that's where she summered while he continued to go to Lake George. Ultimately they divorced. She went to NM full time and blossomed.

Well, that's a start. Just flesh it out, and we have that novel. I imagine it's been written already, though.

There's a painting of hers in our museum (Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford) called "The Lawrence Tree". It's a Ponderosa Pine on the estate of D.H. Lawrence. The novel can take some neat twists and turns. Lawrence's wife was the sister of Manfred von Richtoven.
