Did I miss the 4-Play?

At 4:00 today (Thursday, 4/21), I tuned in, since I've grown to enjoy the 4-Play. Nicole was on the air as expected, but there was no vocal music! The music log didn't show any, either. After all the promotion of the aria contest, this is doubly surprising. What happened?

Sorry folks. Change of plan. You may have heard our AM signal is going HD (High Definition) tomorrow at noon. I was hoping to fit in the contest for the 4 Play but was not able to do that today.

I'm also Promotions Director (plus Program Director) here at Beethoven so it's my job to get press, the Governor, the Mayor and a ton of other guests to the launch party for the HD. So besides being on air, I've been on the phone with guests making sure all have rides to the event, the press has press kits, the food and booze is delivered, the tent is set up, the HD technology is ready, my staff understands their duties, the special banners we printed are picked up, promo's are running, the Beethoven Studio is set, photographer understands what we need, etc.

To be fair to the CT Opera (and they understand) I have pushed the contest to Monday. I cannot give them correct exposure if I'm doing a half assed job on air.

My deepest apologies but my show was not the greatest today and tomorrow I have to wrap the party, break it down and rush back to the studio to do my shift. You may find me passed out on the floor tomorrow.

OH! Plus I have to close on one of my houses tomorrow before 10AM! My lawyer hates me since I said we have to make this one quick. Luckily Chris Larsen is buying it and we have no disagreements on anything and should be out of there early so I can set up the party tomorrow by 11AM party start time. Wish me luck!

O.K., what's High Definition radio, and how does it work on A.M., or on anything else for that matter?

I have always been under the impression that A.M. was a bit of an oddity in these days when everything is F.M., but apparently not. It's normally subject to interference, and takes up far more room on the dial per station than F.M.

Does this mean I need a new car radio? How do I find out if there's HiDef Radio in my area? Gotta go google some more.

There's a columnist that comments that there are 3 manufacturers, at the moment, of HiDef radios. Prices are rather high. I expect it will follow the price patterns of CD players and HiDef TV sets and the prices will drop as more manufacturers enter the market.

TV transmission here is moving towards digital. Some of it already is fully digital; some is not.

I don't know about radio, but I would think FM equipment bought in the last 5 years is digital. I get the impression from the article that Selma found that HD radio is primarily of interest to AM broadcasters, since FM is mostly digital anyway.

If it can fix the static & fade problems of AM, while retaining AM's ability to transmit outside line of sight, it will be very useful.

Hello Folks!

Yup we are now in HD! For an AM signal it means we are in stereo (no more mono) we sound like an FM signal, no more static and "noise" that you hear in an AM signal. We sound like FM!

Reception of HD on AM or FM requires a HD receiver. JVC, Panasonic and Kenwood already have HD car radios on the market and Alpine should have one out soon. Boston Acoustics, Polk and several other manufacturers will start selling HD table radios in May and June. The prices are fairly high, but are expected to drop quickly (as is true of any new technology).

With an HD radio, an HD AM station will offer "FM like" audio quality, in stereo. An FM HD station will provide "near-CD quality". This is a big selling point vs. satellite radio which offers inferior audio quality.

HD AM provides call letters on the radio display and can provide song titles and other information.

HD reception is limited to the primary coverage area of a station. It does not extend the range of a station and is not always usable in the outer areas of a station's signal.

WTMI will be the first HD AM station in the state, and the first commercial classical AM station to adopt the new technology in the country!

And our AM signal will transmit song information to HD receivers in about a month.

It's really exciting stuff! All radio stations across the country are expected to go HD, it's now becoming the industry norm. All new TV sets sold, have HD technology, the same is now true for radio. We are going all HD as well!
Car makers are now putting HD radios in their cars too, BMW and Mercedes now do it and the others are catching on.

Now that we have the technology, why not promote it correctly? There is no such thing as "High Defenition" Radio or HD AM. There is trademark abuse. Stations all around the country are doing just that. Click on my link for the details.

HD Radio is almost as good (well, maybe not almost as good) as the
Eureka-147 brand of digital radio which has been accepted throughout most of the world.
Here is another explanation of why DAB shines.
