Heat Wave

Having a heat wave...

Temperature 33°C (91 F)
FEELS LIKE 41°C (105 F)

hot hot hot....

Power grid strain. We are being asked to reduce our consumption of power pronto...

It's not only heat that you suffer from, but a thing called "heat stress", based on a formula combining shade temperature and humidity.
Which is why 30°C in New York or Tel Aviv may be less bearable than 40°C in the Sahara.

It looks like the eastern half of North America is sweltering. The old saying goes "It's not the heat, it's the humidity."

I have a friend in New Orleans, where they've modified it slightly: "It's not the heat, it's the stupidity."

But it's true, muggy weather is much, much less comfortable than the same temperature with low humidity. Here in the DC area, the thermometer is hitting the low 90s (F), but with humidity to match, the "heat index" is hitting 100.


I still think it beats sleet, but there are those who feel differently.

I lived in Miami for two years and the worse heat I ever experienced was during a week visit to St Catherines, Canada.
96F, 99% humidity.

Piq, I lived in southern Ontario for a while, and I agree, although any temp over the low 20s (more than about 75F) is too hot for me, regardless of the humidity.

We don't have much of a problem with the kind of heat wave in Alberta that they're having out east, but of course, it can get pretty cold in the winter (-35 or so, about -25F), when we console each other with, "It's cold, but it's a dry cold."

Yeh, well, you may have heard about the British climate being described as "temperate": that refers to average conditions - not the extremes. If you grew up surviving the bitter cold wet of winter and the sweaty mugginess of some of the summer heatwaves in London (like down the tube, or before air conditioning was common), you probably will not be put off either by Siberian "brass monkey" weather or extreme dry desert heat.
That's what's meant by the "hardy island race" and "mad dogs and Englishmen..."

Well, the heat's bugging me more this summer - first summer in 7 years without A/C. So we have this nice house, no A/C... oh, well. At least I had it when I was pregnant - my husband needed a blanket some summer nights then -> and I just had a sheet over my tummy.

On average, Rochester gets about 3 90+ days (F) a summer. We've had at least that many already and it's not July yet! And last summer, we didn't have any 90+ days (we went from July 4 2003 to this June without a 90 degree day). I grew up without A/C and remember we usually only had a couple of uncomfortable nights. My folks still don't have A/C, but did spring for a ceiling fan for their bedroom recently. I still think a dry heat is hot, but much more bearable.

I'm one of those crazies that loves the north. At least the snow melts eventually - we don't get tornados, hurricanes (well, sometimes a little rain and wind will reach us, but no big deal), fires, mudslides, earthquakes or severe flooding. An occasional 2 feet of snow in 24 hours is much easier to deal with than any of the above weather conditions...

I can't believe it.

One of the hottest days in (English) history tomorrow, and I'm doing work experience at a solicitors' firm. Which means I'll be wearing a suit.

Question is - will they cough up for ice in your soda at lunch time?

In one pub in ?Durham? we were asked if we wanted our beer "regular" or "extra cold". I guess because of our accents .
One of the group ordered the ec. It still wasnt all that cold.

You know Piq, that's exactly what my firm's management did a few years ago when the a/c once conked out in mid-summer - approved a special budget for cold drinks.

Yes, a known Brit quirk: "The way Americans drink beer is with the flavour frozen out of it..."

That's because most of our big brand beers taste better if you cant actually taste them. Ice-freaking-cold is the only way to choke down the shockingly popular mexican beer Corona, which tastes like chemicals and slightly sour. <ick>

I like ales, and I like them at ~ Brit temperatures.

How come no one in America has tried the bedouin method of wrapping themselves in THICK, BLACK, ALL-ENCOMPASSING ROBES to keep cool in this heat wave?.......

Maybe I'll try that this weekend....I wonder if the neighbors will call the authorities...

Isn't that similar to the Native American use of blankets (or ponchos)?
