Hey, piqaboo, I just checked out your picture. Great! And so timely. I think the sign says "Please don't feed the goblins". Of course, most of that was obscured by the web. I extrapolated after the first 2 words.

As for my earlier post, it was directed at Selma, who I also appreciate for many reasons, including a great sense of humor. I just thought Ethan could use a friend in defense of his right to be different. I also know Ethan doesn't need the help. It just seemed to be what a friend should do.

Barfle, I was not taking issue with anything you said. I generally agree with you 100%, except when you go technical and lose me.

It was nice of Lliam to join the minority opinion. That's 2 for uncelebrating Halloween. Any more before Nov 1 makes it moot?

Now that I've looked up what I'm accused of, what do you, Ethan, mean by that (please be specific), and why is it that you think it's a bad thing? You've used the term twice so you must mean something by it.

Ethan, luv, I am terribly, and permanently, allergic to people who honestly believe that there are two states of belief: those who agree with the speaker, and those who are wrong. And whenever you begin speaking on any subject on which you have any religious opinion, this allergy acts up, I get a sinus headache, and the headache makes me cranky. My hormones have nothing to do with it. It's my allergy to bigotry.

I have not, so far, lost track of the thing I use for a sense of humor. I just don't see much point to wasting it any further on a guy who would provoke an argument, object to being argued with, keep notes, post a play-by-play, and then accuse other people of picking on him.

The great Costume and Candy Scam has as much to do with authentic devil worship (if such, in fact, exists) as baby chickens have to do with Easter. Halloween remains a great excuse for a party, and I enjoy it.

BTW, Catholic, Episcopal, and Lutheran churches generally make mention of All Saints/All Souls somewhere around this time of year. Often including a special celebratory mass. If "nobody you know" celebrates it, maybe you need to meet some devout Christians. Pastor Lindquist would be delighted to explain it all to you, I'm sure.

Let me hijack this to Halloween art (and music). My wife and I give tours at our local museum. We had 5th graders today. The theme was called Scenes of the Supernatural (ie Happy Halloween). We did 6 pictures, 3 with music. Those 3 were:

The Lady of Shalott (William Holman Hunt), a gorgeous scene from Tennyson's poem. He painted the moment she looked out the window (at Sir Lancelot), and a curse came down on her in the form of wind that scattered her tapestry (life's work). There's a great gust of wind in Bloch's Schelomo, about 7 min into it.

Peter van Laer's Alchemist (a self portrait) is a Faustian scene with a demon's claws coming for him from stage right. The last 30 seconds of Franck's Accursed Hunter was JUST RIGHT!

Saul and the Witch of Endor by Benjamin West is a great scene with the ghost of Samuel appearing before a frightened Saul. In this case the music was the exact same scene "Apparez! --- Apparez! ---" through the actual appearance, from Honegger's King David.

The reason this is worth mentioning is that the combinations worked so well, the kids and their chaperones loved it. There may be some new young classic fans in the making.

On a more amateur level, anybody anywhere near Escondido would enjoy dropping by my daughter's and son-in-law's home. Turn east on Felicita from Escondido Blvd, go until you see the ship. A couple or three blocks, across from Felicita Villas. Find parking at the grade school around the corner, come to a performance. Or two.

I was there for the dress rehearsal tonight and this whole three minute show is a real hoot. I'm going back tomorrow, just to watch the trick-or-treaters watching the show.

It's great fun.

I heard on the radio today (not B.com ----- forgive me) an announcer say Night on Bald Mountain is about Halloween. It isn't. It is about St John's Night (June 24), when Chernobog (meaning black god) holds a witches' sabbath on Mt Triglav (Bald Mountain, although I thought triglav meant 3 peaks) according to my Concert Companion.

My old Stokowski recording (with Stokowski's slightly different version) stated St John's Eve (June 23). The following anecdote comes from that. My second wife's birthday is July 23, and mine is May 24. Midnight June 23/24 is in the middle. Seizing the opportunity, I said we should get married on that midnight, and play Night on Bald Mountain for the wedding music. Unfortunately, her minister was not available that midnight, and her friend, whose house was offered for the reception, was unenthusiastic. Joyce sided with THEM. Well, another ingenious idea down the toilet. We got married anyway.

Halloween is being pushed quite hard here. I'm not sure why; I don't think it's much of a party for adults, not yet anyway, and I find it odd that people who insist on driving their children to school for fear of accidents and paedophiles will happily let them go house to house asking "trick or treat".

I like the reference to the "costume & candy scam". Christmas is even worse. It lasts a whole lot longer for a start, and there are very few new carols worth hearing. "Mary's Boy Child" is the only one that comes to mind, and even then the only bit I really like is the chorus.

I don't mean to be anti-Christian here, EJA. It's just that I am more than a little tired of the commercialism & hype of Christmas. Our emergency services and hospitals have their busiest time at Christmas. The in-your-face buy, buy, buy just overwhelms some people.

Lots of candy gone (some taken in mass quantity when left as a self-serve bowl) and two jack-o-lantern's smashed by the older "children".
But many happy very small children, who were polite, nervous, happy all at the same time.


Selma's family's pirate ship show was terrific!
What a lot of work and it went so well - I saw it twice, half each on my way in and out of the yard, and once sitting thru the entire show. GREAT !!!!!!!!!

I thouroughly enjoyed halloween. Just a few short hours after getting off the bus from boot camp, I was out in my black dress, fishnet stcokings, and black curly hair wig collecting candy with my little sister. I can only imagine what my drill instrctors would have to say about that.

I believe half of Escondido found the Pirates show. Just wait till next year, when Garrett has the time to do things properly...

Garrett considered Halloween a success.

It probably doesn't help that Christmas comes in the middle of summer down there!

I think there are many Christmas carols that, when well sung, are absolutely beautiful.
