More Opera?

Postby The Great Carouser » Fri Jun 18, 2004 9:59 am

Sort of a poll....I'm in favor of more opera in the mix here on the BBB and was interested in what others thought. You may add reasons of course.....

Additionally, I experience the thrill of Threadwhoring.... ;)

Actual opera, no. Yucch. The recordings of actual stage opera don't suit me at all. Badly miked, background noise, balance between orchestra and vocalists needs work.

Some of the selections from operas, produced in a decent sound studio, are a different thing. Except for that "Revenge" thing, for which there is no excuse.

We need more good basses, too.

Too bad there don't seem to be any useful recordings of Liu's aria from Turandot, at least in b,c's collection. I'd love to hear that a few times, but apparently it's not separated on the CD from all the recatitivo around it.

There are plenty of non-stage recordings of opera music, though, like Sarah Brightman's version of Nessun Dorma.
:p

Other than that, I like just about all the vocal pieces they play.

I agree.
Although I do enjoy seeing the live shows that come to town. Aida will be here in the spring, and I'm dying to go.
As for listening though, I think Selma is right on. Give me a good studio recording any day of the week. I like my opera "pure".

More opera on B.com?

Duh.

Actually, I third Selma. I love listening to good studio recordings of opera music, hate listening to real performances.

Barfle, my recording of the big "T" is a studio recording of the full opera(funny in that two parts are sung by the same singer). Liu's aria(which one?) is done superbly by Monserrat(sp?) Caballe, but it is not separated out from the surrounding music.

I enjoy listening to opera, but I really dislike it as background music. I dont play b.com when I'm at work, so more opera would be nice!
Altoid - curiously strong.

Hmmm, in English it starts "Liu can take no more." It's just before she dies.

The more famous aria is "Signore Ascolta" from Act 1. Yours is called "Tu che di gel sei cinta" from Act 3

This information as well as more than most of us will ever want or need to know about opera is from this website:

One of the features is a large, searchable database of arias. User beware! This is not your Google search engine. Different rules apply. ;)

I tried the MIDI stream of "Mon Coeur S'ouvre a ta Voix" and it was positively foul! The translations might be useful from time to time though. Likewise the libretti.
