Day-em. I'm reading this about Cathey's widow seeing the casket for the first time and Williams' Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis comes on. I'm glad no one came in my cube to see the tears streaming down my face.

I got to the end of the first page, where the marine is standing on the porch taking his deep breath. I was already teary-eyed at that point.
My cube faces the entry to our office area. Didnt figure I wanted to be sitting here teary-faced. I'll save my reading for a quiet evening at home.

The SD U-T newspaper runs stories on locals who joined the armed forces and were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan - long interviews with friends, family etc. Difficult reading also.

Know I'm late on this, but it was referenced in another thread and thought I'd add family who served:

Great Uncle George - Navy? WWII
(I think another great uncle died there, but can't remember)

I think my husband's grandfather was a doctor in WWII also.

Uncle Bob - USAF - Vietnam years

cousin George - Navy - ~1992-1996 (ROTC 1988-92)
now builds submarines

cousin Seana - Navy - ~1996-present

brother Ric - USAF - 1993-2001

my dad so wanted to enlist - but can't see 5 feet in front of him without glasses (and foot problems, and an EEG with a 'normal abnormality which may or may not be normal'). my brother was thrilled to not inherit the poor vision even though he never made it to pilot training.

It's never too late to honor your family members

My older half-brother from Michigan is in town this week, and we got together for ribs at Fat Ivors last Sunday.

He told me something pretty shocking about our father: It turns out he was the most decorated Michigan soldier of WWII. His medals include 4 Silver Stars, 4 Bronze Stars, and 4 Purple Hearts, among other decorations. It seems the only thing he didn't get was a MOH.

My brother's going to send me a copy of Dad's DD-214 so I'll know everything.

OT, I'm really, REALLY impressed!!!!!!

Please post as much of the DD-214 you can and you MUST get the "citations to accompany.." that will outline what he did for each medal. I doubt Silver Star Registry will have anything but you might check anyway. If you need help with the address and the forms you need to get a copy of his military records let me know and I'll be glad to help.

Thank you, I will. I tried downloading the software from the Silver Star Registry, and it didn't work.

I think it will be tough or impossible to get a copy of his service record. Did you ever hear about the big warehouse fire some time ago that burned a lot of records? I seem to recall his jacket was in there.

I'm still in shock. Trying to come to grips with the probability that my in-house hero was bigger than I ever knew.

We'll know more in a couple of weeks.

Living in the environs of DC, I always make it a point to take visitors from out of town to Arlington National Cemetery. The nearly endless rows of headstones says something far more profound than I could ever voice.

I'm pretty sure that Calverton Cemetary here on Long Island puts up
American Flags at each grave site on Veterans Day.
I know they do it each Memorial Day.

They have the local boy/girl scout troups go through the entire cemetary
to decorate for our fallen brothers/sisters.....

It is an impressive site....
