This is just one man's opinion, but I think it has some merit:

I read the article and don't understand why the author insists Jesus was not a carpenter. Rabbi and carpenter are not mutually exclusive.

Shos,

I think the author's point is that there is nothing in the Bible to suggest that he was a carpenter.

I agree with you that there is nothing that prevents him from being both.

If Joseph was a carpenter, what are the chances Jesus didn't know how to build stuff? The workshop wouldn't have been far from the house in a little village. And it's fairly sure that Jesus had to do something useful before he started the whole wandering teacher thing, when he was thirty or so.

Take a poll: of eldest sons, how many don't know how to do whatever it was Dad did when Dad was in the garage?

My dad was a jewellery and diamond merchant, but (probably to my financial disadvantage) I never took to wheeling and dealing, and I have an indifferent attitude to all kinds of baubles.
What I DID inherit from him was an aptitude for languages.
I qualified as an electronics engineer; my son is an economist (and good at languages - the only person I ever met who learnt both Russian and Welsh! - also has my computer literacy.)
My son-in-law is a lawyer, his pa is a mechanical engineer.
My maternal grandfather was a tailor; my uncle, his eldest son, owns a printing firm.

BTW, The debt figure is currently about 8.5 trillion dollars, a figure that includes the 'hidden' intergovermental debt. Public debt is about 4.5 trillion dollars.

Iliam,

It is a lot of debt, but we have a lot of assets to back it up.

I don't think Selma was referring to careers so much as interests and hands-on skills. Jewellery and diamond 'merchanting', if I can put it that way, is not something a kid would pick up just by hanging out with his dad.

If the dad was the kind of guy who likes to tinker with cars, or a diy kind of person, fixing and building stuff, his kids would most probably pick up a thing or two. Especially if he is like my dad, who MADE you pitch in - being a girl was no excuse.
