I lost the whole site yesterday around 5PM. No stream, no webcam, no "now playing," no home page. It seems OK now, except the webcam is aimed strangely again...

Oh,dear, dear Donna, whose losing their cool then. Paranoid isn't a naughty word or meant to insult you. In future I suggest you read the whole post and see if there is positive ways to help before you get your claws out. For example did you go to: http://www.grc.com.

That site has some fantastic tools to help anyone with virus probs.

I did read your entire post. I went to the website...told me my machine was OK. 'Course, that was after I fixed all the mess that the worm caused.

My claws were not out at you. The  was for the worm, not you telling me I'm paranoid. BTW: Paranoia is defined as (from Greek, madness, demented) a tendency on the part of an individual or group toward excessive or irrational suspiciousness and distrustfulness of others. I would not say my warning was excessive or irrational. I had been hit by the worm. My warning was based on reality, my dear friend! I was merely trying to give people a simple way to find out if they had been infected. And, to save them some of the work that I had just gone through.

Well, instead of deleting the RPC service data link library (it's a dll, not an exe, in W2K and XP), which is similar to unlocking your door with a sledgehammer and crow bar, you could just stop the RPC services (there are two) and set its startup mode to manual (if you don't know exactly what that means, don't play with fire), which is similar to using a key to open your door. That would protect you from the present blaster/ lovesan worm. However, if you want to use file or print sharing in Windows, you will be up the proverbial crick in the proverbial condition (not so much so as if you delete the rpcss.dll). Furthermore, it won't protect you from the next worm. What you really need is a firewall. If you do not have a hardware firewall (firewall appliance or firewall router) and you are using an XP flavor, you should enable the Internet Connection Firewall on whatever network interfaces are connected to the Internet. This firewall blocks computers on the Internet from accessing ports on your machine that host services that can be exploited by hackers (the Remote Procedure Call, RPC, service being one such service). If you are not using an XP flavor, you need to buy a personal firewall program and install it -- today! Anymore, being on the Internet without a firewall is like running around on a terrorist's rifle range with red bullseyes painted on your clothes.

Better paranoid than naive. ;) What firewall are you using, Donna? (I'd like to avoid that one . . . )

I was using a Earthlink provided generic. I'm now using ZoneAlarm. It's free, but it does seem to pass all the tests.

I started hearing choppers at 11:45AM EBT (Eastern Beethoven Time). I hope this won't be happening all Labor Day weekend! I was hoping to hear Ludwig Saturday....I haven't planned 'til Sunday yet.

1. Open Word, make a new document.

2. Open PM string from Profile page in Explorer.

3. Select the string, or portion thereof, that you want to save. <cntl-a> will select everything.

4. Still in Explorer, <cntl-c> to copy all. Or right-click-copy, or click the copy button in the taskbar.

5. Return to Word document, click in open document, <cntl-v> to paste. Or, as in 4, right-click-paste, or click the paste button in the taskbar.

6. Select "Save As" from the File button on the taskbar, name the document. You now have the string copied. Word will e-mail this wherever you want to send it, too.

I'm aware that some folks, of the tenorical persuasion, dislike Microsoft products. They may have to get over it.
