Forum Help

Postby BigJon » Mon Jan 05, 2004 5:21 pm

I think this forum does a poor job of maintaining the read/unread record of the threads I've visited. I click on "jump to new posts" and some times it is accurate and some times it takes me to stuff I've read days ago. Am I using it wrong or is this working as designed? On some other forums I'm on, the read/unread threads are accurate to the hour of my last visit.

Also the "Today's Active Topics" link sometimes does not capture all the topics that have a new messages.

Hello Big-

We may need to do some house cleaning on the BBB. I'll get in touch with Chris Larsen on this. Also the BBB updates based on your visits (as you stated) and that is tracked through your cookies. If you delete cookies often then the visits may not be tracked correctly. If this is not the case then we may need to clean up the BBB.

My view on the "jump to new posts" link is that it goes to the first one of the last day of posting. That is, if there are posts today, then the first one today is where the jump goes. If the last post was yesterday, then it goes to the first post of yesterday.

I've noticed a few times that I wanted to see something I hadn't seen before, and it didn't take me there, but it did take me to the top of today's posts. Once, that was actually on a previous page where the topic had been unusually active.

Now whether or not that was the programmer's intention...

Howdy. OT is having log-in problems. Is this a conspiracy to prevent him reaching 3000? Even he doesnt believe that (I think / hope /pray)!! OT is looking at barfle with arched eyebrows .

piq is looking for left-over meds....

When OT tries to log on or post, he gets the following error message: bolds mine. Piq.
Sorry, UBB has encountered an unexpected, fatal error. This error is extremely abnormal. Please contact the board administration. The error text is:
...

Can't open 'MembersPath/00001148.cgi'.

Permission was denied - please ask the administrator to check the permissions on that file/directory.

The exact error returned by the operating system is:
Permission denied

Sometimes his attempted posts are showing up on teh "Todays active topics" screen as posted by another board member.

SOS, MayDay, M'aidez Moi! etc.

Thanks much,
piqaboo and Altoid.

Hi Serenity and Piq-

Serenity, the Music Log and Now Playing are fine. You may need to check your cookies or refresh your browser for the site to update.

Piq- You've got me! I'll let Chris Larsen know. Has OT tried to access his profile and change his password for the BBB? We moved the BBB to a different server and found that some users had to change their passwords after the move. Until then I'll let Larsen know and have him post a fix.

Hi Y.R.H.,

I've found that if I post a quote, I can get the post done, even thought I still get the same error message. When I post a quote, it will show up later under "Today's Acitve Topics" under the ID of the previous person who posted instead of my ID, or that of the person I quoted(this will probably show up in TAT as posted by you). However, I can't make an original post(one where I haven't quoted anyone else - hence my quoting your question). I haven't changed my password in months, so I don't think that could be it. Piq and I have used the same computer this morning, and she hasn't encountered the problem.

It's okay, if this is a devious plot by Barfle to keep my post count down, y'all can tell me. I can take it....

;)

Hello,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I've been working on adding webservers to speed up our page loads and I had to move the BB as a result. I tweaked the permissions again so lets see if OT can login now.
