Meal sizes

O.k., this has nothing to do with fast food. It's about the bytes that travel to and apparently from my computer.

My little logger program tells me that I have received about 18 million bytes (18 gig or meg? I get confused.) Rather worryingly, it also tells me I have sent 1.6 gig (or meg?) out.

Where to, and why? Does anyone know?

Oh, sure. Whenever you submit a form, data goes out. When you navigate to a new page, data goes out in the page request. Um, every page packet of data that gets sent to you, your computer has to send a little acknowledgement packet in response.. Um.. You send mail, I suspect... Um, other reasons your computer would send data out... Oh, cookies get sent along with every page request, so that will increase your outbound data volume...

Hmm. 1.6 vs 18. Is this what you get when double clicking on the two monitors under your clock? 1024*1024 bytes is a Meg. 1024 times that is a Gig.. It'd be surprising if you did 18 Gigs in a session, but if you keep your computer going all the time, and have always on internet, yea, you could well get up to 10^9 bytes of data sent and received... If that's for a short period, and you do get 10^9 bytes, wow. BUT until sent goes higher than around a fourth of received bytes, you're probably OK.

Thanks, Ben. It's meg, then, not gig. It's also all incurred while listening to BR, for about an hour & a half. That's why I was puzzled about the outgoings. Granted I change pages etc. when I'm on the BB but 9% approx. outgoing seems excessive. It keeps climbing as I keep listening.

Yes, the data comes from the little "internet connected" icon by the clock.

Ah, Gotcha. (sorry for the DELAY!)

Seems fairly likely you're OK. Now. If you just let your computer sit without using the web or listening to Beethoven and you get 1.6 Megs in an hour, you might have a problem.

Conspiracy theorists would have a field day with that one, Ben. Perhaps BR is an agency of the dreaded military-industrial complex? Or do I have a complex about that??? ;)
