"Now Playing" Window needs to be resized

Postby BigJon » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:14 am

With the addition of the ads on top, the "Now Playing" window needs to be longer. The "next" information is often pushed below the visible portion of the window. It also would be nice if that window could be resized by us.

Big-

We are still working on the Now Playing program. It was a program Chris Larsen (our IT guy) wrote. We had to write something that worked with our site and the new reporting requirements. All the bugs are not worked out yet. I'll let Larsen know about your question with the pop up window.

This morning, the duck shoot banner was showing, and somehow I activated it. I was typing at the time, so I know I didn't click on it. And then I spent the next couple of minutes closing all the dumb windows asking me if I was sure I didn't want the free gift and resizing my IE window.

That happens when our page has not fully loaded. Our homepage is very extensive and has more content then most sties. The site may seem fully loaded but when it's not and you start to type etc. you may end up clicking on the banners and links etc.

Big- Around the middle of last week I configured the code so that you can resize the windows by clicking on the borders and dragging it to whatever size you want (if you are clicking the Now Playing link from our Website menu). If you are using Windows Media Player you should be able to resize the whole player or simply use the scroll bar. I'll keep working on the code to see if I can figure out a better solution based on the size of the text.

Barfle- I'm sorry for the annoyance. I wish we didn't have to put those banner ads in the Player window but we need some means of paying for the new stream. We've already exceeded our expectations for streaming with this company and we need every bit of revenue we can get.

//Begin Shameless Plug
Remember that the Real RadioPass stream does not have connect or banner advertisements and it sounds fantastic at 96Kbps!
//End Shameless Plug

It happened again, and I wasn't even using the PC. I was filing some papers for about 10 minutes, and when I turned around the free player page was filling my screen. I had Outlook and Word open, the Beethoven WMP player, the "Now Playing" window, and a local program used for searching patents. NO beethoven main page window.

This is a bit scary - it's making me want to NOT use the "Now Playing" window.

I understand the need for revenue. I want you to succeed almost as much as you want you to succeed, but if I'm regularly interrupted from getting my work done, I'm going to avoid the cause of the interruption.

And it's happened again, three times in the past hour!

Is anyone else being told they agreed to a free playstaion?

Barfle- Have you checked your computer for spyware? The ads will not pop up by themselves unless you have some type of software that has placed it self on your computer. This is not a problem from our Now Playing or the Beethoven.com site or any aspect of it. I think you may want to check for any programs that do not belong on your computer.

I run Ad-aware regularly. I just did and all it found were some cookies. I'm sure some of those cookies are placed by the ads, though.

I had the program get rid of them. I'll see what happens now.

Well, the damn "duck shoot" banner keeps opening up a "free playstation2" window. I don't even have to be at my desk to have it happen. It's happened twice so far today, and once was when I was at lunch with the DCBBBLB!
:mad:

Of course, the browser window it opens fills the computer screen, which means the next time I open a browser window, it's full sized as well.

Is anyone else experiencing this interruption?

barfle,
Im not seeing any problems from the ads except a desire to smack my monitor to make the blinking ones go away.
Nothing is opening up unasked except that shot at a 50$ gift certificate if I just answer one easy Q..... and that opens no matter what websites I have open.

Nope, the "shoot the duck" doesn't hijack my Explorer. It's still v5.0.5 and may not have the handle that the evil duck is grabbing.

There is another wretched banner that has hijacked my home page setting and kept setting off popups to add me to a mailing list. That programmer is spending eternity in a very warm location.

Barfle- I know you don't want to hear this but, it's not us. I checked with our pop up ad company and there is no way that can happen b/c of the ads. It has to be something in your browser. You may want to check with that company or check your computer or ask your admin person if you are at work.

Barfle are you running the lavasoft freeware or the upgraded version? I've had the freeware for a while now but recently ran a program called Spyware Stormer and discovered that Ad Aware 6 (freeware) doesn't seem to do a full registry scan. The spyware found numerous registry entries the freeware didn't. Of course if you have the paid version of Ad Aware this should be a moot point.

I need to update this post. If you have the freeware version of Ad Aware 6 and before you scan you seleect 'customize' you may specify a deep registry scan (along with the rest of your system). It also pays to make sure you've the latest version of the ad database by checking for updates before you scan.

Just FYI, the shooting ducks seem to be the only ad that's commiting the evil deed. And I don't need another browser window open at the time - a new window opens that is full-sized, which is, as I have noted, doubly annoying because the next time I open a browser window (IE6.0.2800.1106CO with SP1) it's full-sized as well.

Of course, it doesn't happen every time, either. I've seen the duck shoot ad and been ready for it to muck up the works, but it seems to know if I'm paying attention to it or not. It kind of sounds like Piq is having a similar situation, but with a different ad.
:confused:

As far as the Ad-aware is concerned, it's the free version and I checked for updates the last time I ran it (after I started complaining about the ducks/free playstation ad but before the latest incident of duck invasions). I had it do as full a scan as I could find.

BTW, the other problem I mentioned, about the "play" button having my browser think it needed to download and run some kind of program has either fixed itself, or you guys fixed it. So the "play" button works just fine now. Thanks to whoever made it work.

So far today, so good.
