The blue screens take awhile. They always do, unless you had the misfortune of buying Shutters Me - then you got them right away. I had Me, had problems with it right out of the box, so I switched back to 98se. That experience made me very leery of running out and getting TF's latest and greatest.

I've never heard of that kind of problem with a floppy drive. Silly question: Is the drive clean? I've had lots of problems over the years with dusty floppy drives. Usually involved a computer at work(parts departments can be dusty). Either way, a floppy drive is cheap and easy to replace.

Well, the floppy worked perfectly immediately prior to upgrading. I haven't tried cleaning it yet but will try that before I go out and buy a new one. Floppy drives are cheap too, but who knows if that will actually fix the problem?

It reads files fine. I have formatted a disk fine. It's just a problem when writing larger files. Weird.

In these days of cd's I hardly ever use my floppy drive. ("A" drive).

Also, XP is as steady as a rock. I have the home edition. My computer doesn't crash to a blue screen, ever, in the 2.5 years I've had it. Just occasionally, it will get itself into a loop and I re-set it. Perhaps if I was more patient I wouldn't have to do that. It sometimes likes to change down a gear too, dropping from 2000 to 1250 mhz. A short trip to the Setup screen fixes that.

In short, XP is good.

OT, with your reload of 98se, did you happen to get the Charmap.exe that we discussed a while back?

Hi Barfle,

Funny you should bring that up. As a matter of fact, it still does not seem to be in my system. I tried "charmap" and "charmap.exe" from Run in the Start menu, and nada.

You might try doing a find for a file named "map" and see what happens.

Go into control panel, add/remove programs, pick the Windows tab (not the one it goes to) and you'll find it (I think) in Accessories. Check it and it should load up.

Hi Rich, went there, did it, nada. I found Accessories as you suggested, checked its contents(didn't list "charmap"), loaded it anyway, then tried to run it from the start menu to no avail.

Barfle, I tried searching for "map" and "charmap". Not there.

The copy of Shutters 98se I have was originally supplied with a computer. Could it possibly be that since that was the case it didn't come with that accessory?

Unless you really enjoy all this whining about 98, that is. XP has charmap. So far, no BSOD. Multiple user desktops, all personalized.

Selma, I'm still not getting it. Are you trying to tell me something?

Abandon 98. Upgrade.

"Frugal"? How much of your life did you intend to spend knocking your head against an opsys that won't work the way you want it to? How much time have you got, anyway? Estimate the hours you've already put into this project and figure out what else you could've done with the time. Played with the baby, painted Piq's toes, petted the bird. Unpacked those books in the boxes in the garage. Polished the ugly truckling until he gleams.

I know obstinate when I see it. I'm well acquainted with stubborn and intransigent. "Frugal" indeed. <snort of disgust>

The opsys is functioning quite well currently. I just don't have umlaut capability.

It's amazing how well a dead horse can run sometimes if you beat it properly.

Actually, you might. Charmap doesn't give you the character, it just tells you how to put it into a document. Try this:

Reply to this message, and while your cursor is in the window, hold down the alt key and type in 0235. You should end up with "ë" showing behind the cursor.

Alt + 0228 gives you ä.
Alt + 0239 gives you ï.
Alt + 0246 gives you ö.
Alt + 0252 gives you ü.

Your homework will be displayed on the WWW for all to see.

Monsieur OT,

What I did above to produce the "c cedille" (ç) was this:
1. Open up Microsoft Word.
2. Insert-Symbol, select the symbol I wanted, then clicked on the insert button in the lower right corner. This can be repeated for all the special symbols you want, thus making your own character map in a Word document.
3. Click the cancel button when done.
4. Save the file and call it charmap.doc, say, on your desktop.
5. Whenever you want one of the symbols. open your charmap document, and use copy and paste.

Kludge-y, but works!!

Hi Tim, I see what you mean.

Hi Barfle, does it start with alt+0200?

It actually starts at 0031, which gives you a blank space. 0032 is an exclamation point, and the place it fizzles out depends on the font. I suspect with the fonts used in the reply message box, it dies at 0255, which is ÿ.
