New Site Design?

Postby OperaTenor » Thu Oct 21, 2004 2:44 pm

Hi B.com,

I like the new site design. Something bizarre is ocurring, however. The page is centered on my screen (I use 1280 X 1024 pixel screen size), but the all of the drop down menus appear on the left margin of the screen, off the side of the page when I position the cursor over the appropriate spot on the toolbar.

Anyone else have this happen?

There is a bug that will show the menus off to the left until the page finishes loading. If the page has loaded completey then it should show underneath each of the menus. I'm working to figure out a better way to prevent the problem but I haven't found a really good method yet.

Thanks, Chris, just wanted to make sure you were aware of it. As you can tell, it hasn't kept me from navigating/posting.

Nothing could stop you OT, unless someone broke all of your fingers or there is another system error. ;)

For me, using Safari, the drop down menus always appear at the left margin of the page even after the page is fully loaded.

Something's different today......

Correct me if I'm wrong: Has the font for headers and titles on the BBB changed? Is this indicative of any other changes to the system?

Yes, it has. And I have a complaint. The color for links that have already been clicked is a dark brown on my screen; it is almost indistinguishable from the black for the text. So when you are looking at page numbers at the bottom of a thread you can't tell which pages are visited and which is the page you are on without very close scrutiny. This is another pet peeve of mine, web designers who feel the need to change the paradigm of color coding for links that are visited and unvisited. Leave unclicked links blue and clicked links red and no one will have to relearn the code with each webpage. Hubris!

Calm, people calm. As I've stated in other posts we are working on the web site. The site will do some wacky stuff until we get all the bugs worked out. Don't email, no smoke signals nor send the rescue dogs. We have it under control. ;)

Personally, I've found that there are no drop-down menus any more. When I put my cursor over "Community" to get to the BBB, I see a text window that disappears when I move the mouse.

All the menu selections are at the top of the screen, with nothing to distinguish between one and the next.

Right now the top of my window reads:

Now Playing Music Log Contests Web Cam Schedule Host Biographies Weekend Feature

Four more similar lines below that. They are links, and that's how I got here this morning.

And when I put my cursor over "Community" then move it off, the line "Bulletin Board Beethoven's Backyard Wallpaper Link to Us" disappears along with its links, and won't reappear until I go to another page.

Running Win XP Pro, FireFox for my browser.

I have the BBB bookmarked, else I would not have been able to get here right now. The B.com pulldown menus aren't working at all.

JFYI.

Chris,

How about fixing the color of the clicked-on links. The dark brown is way too close to the black text.

The main page code is so badly constructed, that the only browser it works (sort of) correctly with is Internet Explorer for PCs. Even there, it flashes all the pulldown menu links on a blank page before finally displaying the full main page and has other odd behaviors. A simple test with a syntax checker reveals numerous errors. (See http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=www.beethoven.com )
