PM Notification

Postby BigJon » Thu Dec 02, 2004 12:06 am

For some reason I am only being notified at the top of the page that I have a new Private Message when I am browsing Dan's BB. I thought in the past it would notify you when you browsed any board or the main page. What gives?

Howdy *igJon,

I'm sure you know this. "My profile" shows up at the top of every page. I simply ignore any status messages and click on that once in a while to check for any PMs.

It gets curiouser and curiouser. Today, for the first time, the new message alert was at the top of every forum I visited. Weird!

I had a pm when I signed on this evening. I read the pm, refreshed the "today" screen, and the alert message was gone.

I'm running XP, I've recently run the updates, have a current Explorer, running McAfee antivirus, and having no trouble. What opsys and browser are you guys using that are posting the trouble incidents?

At work today, so far no pm issues on this computer. Opsys is Win2000 (a "securitied" crippled version), and Explorer 5.50.somethingoddball (also securitied and crippled).

Explorer complains about errors when the page loads, but Explorer seems to be designed by the devious, for the dumb, and it repairs things as it goes. I don't know if Netscape will do that. We do know that there are errors in the b.com page redesign.

Here's hoping Chris comes back from vacation soon, and overflowing with energy and ambition. ;)

Might we be in server Hell again?

I have a pm notification, and I get the following message when I attempt to access my profile:

"An error has occurred:

MembersPath/pm_topics/M/00001300.cgi did not return a true value at CGIPath/ubb_lib.cgi line 953.

Please inform the board administration of this error so that they may fix the problem. Thank you!

» Please use your browser's back button to return."

Help me, super Chris Larsen!

Yes, funny things are occuring on the board. One of my posts dematerialized and then later rematerialized on a different thread. That post was near the end of the 1st page as a 2nd page had just started. Entering into the 2nd page by clicking a new post link, I saw the numbers 1,2 available so that I could click to the 1st page again. But when I got to the first page, there were no such numbers to allow me to go back to the 2nd page.

PM notifications seem to occur on a whim. I haven't experienced a notification without a new PM, but I have experienced no notification when a PM was in My Profile.

And my email only receives messages sent from the server. I am receiving no outside email at all.

Now what I want to know is... WHO'S THE WISEGUY THAT FED GIZMO AFTER MIDNIGHT? :p

OT: have you tried to access profile using different browsers? Nicole said they're tweaking the system again, it may have turned Firefox-unfriendly :(

Doesn't work with Exploder, either.

Must be you, then. Maybe the post count has overloaded the bb software and they'll have to start you over. ;)

OT,
Could it be a virus on your PC?

Hi TM,

No, we've had this stuff happen before on the BBB. They use two servers in tandem, and one went wonky. People started getting false pm notifications, and part of the board got stuck in an alternate universe of sorts. Chris knows better, but I'm sure it's code related. GC was the one who got stuck in the position I may be in now, and he had to reregister and lost his post count in the process.
Besides, I'm not the only one having difficulties right now. Several(including you, I thought) posters have had false pm notifications and vanishing posts.

I have Norton Anitvirus 2005, and subscribe to get the updates. The last time I got a virus was just before I updated my virus protection(from Norton '02) and I used Exploder. It was a trojan horse, and I nuked it before it did any damage.

I haven't logged off since I started having problems, in hopes they'll take notice and get it fixed.

OT,
Just an thought I had.
I have not had any PM issues.
It's just strange that only a few have this problem and it appears to be random which makes troubleshooting very difficult.
Tks,
Howard
