Suspicious email

Postby 1st_oboe » Wed Apr 20, 2005 2:16 pm

Hi techie people... this email just didn't look quite right to me.

The three things that red flagged this in my mind are:
1. If it's from b.com, why was it marked as spam?
2. Don't emails from the tech team usually have Chris Larsen's name on them, rather than "beethoven.com technical support team"?
3. I'm ALWAYS suspicious of any unsolicited zip file, you never know what can be in those.... (or if they're really zip files, for that matter)

Dear user 1st_oboe@beethoven.com,

Your email account was used to send a large amount of unsolicited email during the recent week.
Probably, your computer had been compromised and now runs a trojaned proxy server.

Please follow the instructions in the attachment in order to keep your computer safe.

Virtually yours,
beethoven.com technical support team.

Did you e-mail Chris, as well as posting? Personally, I'd be suspicious myself. I'd definitely advise against opening that attachment.

Not from us. Spammers are really good at masking emails and making them look legit. This spammer really took the time to dress up this email.

Yes all email from us will be direct from Chris and will NOT contain links, attachments etc. We also post info on the homepage and BBB. If you ever have a question email us directly at helpme@beethoven.com

If you opened that zip file please run a virus check on your computer ASAP. We will also target and destroy the email account that sent the spam email to you . Thanks for the heads up!

Update: I just spoke with Chris about this email. It's not even from our servers. This spammer did an excellent job of masking the email by using a Beethoven.com account. We do not even have this account in our database. It's a fake Beethoven.com and is used to block the spammers real address so we can't track him. Damn them!

If NM and Chris locate the spammers using the b.com header, they may just qualify them.. :D

While we wait for the successful hunt, are you volunteering, PSIP?

Na, Piqaboo, I just sit here and listen to B.Com and run Trend Mico just to make sure.

Sorry 1st_oboe but that email we can not track. It's worthless to us. It's best to delete it or forward it to spam@beethoven.com Our filters will then block it within 48 hours.
