Wasnt supposed to be funny. I cant imagine why you thought it was supposed to be.
Those houses were built on stone foundations to handle flooding.
This storm and the broken levees probably brought more flooding than they were designed for, however they would have gracefully survived almost anything else NOLA got served.

We've been discussion alternative ways of rebuilding NOLA, and this is an illustration that this kind of thought is not new.

I agree with piq, they look like solid stone foundations, which was typical of houses built in the Mississippi delta prior to the '30s.

There was a house on Navarre Beach near Pensacola.
Looked like a sphere of some kind. The design was half sponsored by the government to withstand Hurricanes on the coast. When Ivan hit Pensacola area last September, houses on Navarre Beach got leveled. This round odd looking home sustained the Hurricane.
Not sure what would happen with a 30 foot storm surge, but heck, let's hope when they rebuild the Gulf Coast, they use some proven techniques to minimize damage.

All I hope is that whatever type of housing is rebuilt, that the areas for low income are higher quality than what they used to be - brick compounds that were pretty dingy. Whatever they do, it will take a loooooong time to get enough housing available let alone drinking water and with them pumping the nasty water into the lake, there goes any fishing or entertainment in that body of water for a long time. I'm surprised there aren't environmental activists on the news protesting that but perhaps they have more sense to realize that the water had to go somewhere or the news folks choose not to let them on the air.

And hey, I think they're using the nasty water to put out the fires. Not that it matters where the water came from I guess.

I guess evacuees aren't too fond of being sent to the pacific northwest since plans to do intake in providence clinics (my program) have been put on hold.

The University of Rochester, where I work, is taking a bunch of students from the gulf area (or is preparing to do so). This includes medical students, and the nursing school is both accepting students and sending nurses where ever they might be needed.

There was something in our local paper about a local doctor and his wife on their honeymoon in NO - ended up in the Superdome treating mostly noncritical patients, and sending the critical ones to a military clinic set up in the dome or to be airlifted out. Amazing how many people fled and forgot their medications.

So glad to see how many people and institutions across the country are doing what they can to help the victims of Katrina. Finally some real good news...

Environmentalism and sense diverged a long time ago. Read http://activistcash.com/ for a real eye-opener on the least sensible organizations. Just be warned that there is a lot of repetition on the site and a bunch of unverified claims, but the items I have researched have held up. Really angries up my blood.

I check out the Humane Society. The site gets all excited and spews venom because they are effective fund raisers and are not an animal shelter. No duh. The Humane Society predates animal shelters. It exists to cause legislation to be passed for the well-being of animals, which it does*. It makes no attempt to hide this fact or mislead, as the site claims. *In England this year, it got fox-hunting banned.

The site is going to have to do better than that.
