Analog's right, at least in my experience.
Nevertheless, I wouldn't chuck the recordings, especially if they seem to be in good condition.
If you get the opportunity, play them. If you play them on a victrola, remember to replace the needle
everytime you play a record. Needles wear faster than the records, and a worn needle will expedite the wear of the record.
It may even be worthwhile to transfer the recordings to digital format.
