I have MSO2K at both home and office, and the paper kitty isn't available. I use the Einstein guy, who at least doesn't make much noise unless you're emptying your "sent items" folder in Outlook.

I use Word Perfect, which means my helper is a little "Help" button at the top, that doesn't pop up unless I ask it too.

Beats the heck out of that annoying little paper clip.

Word is no BankStreet Writer -- ah the days of AppleIIe's in College. (That was top notch technology in early 1980's classroom folks).

I really really miss those big floppy disks!!!

What I really miss is a really cool game for the IIe called Aztec -- a pretty decent Indiana Jones type game that occupied my roommate and I for hours, and hours, and hours, and hours (that's why we had a tiny fridge in our room -- Cold Beer for breakfast after a late night of Aztec).

Also, I can top your WordPerfect and BankStreet Writer for outright weirdity. I use Word when I can't get around it, but most of the time we're working in Quicksilver. It's a full publishing program and does things that Word won't let you even dream of. It also has no helpers, no autocorrect, no autogrammercheck, no autospellcheck, no autoanything.

I love it dearly and I won't be recommending it to anyone; there's about a year-long learning curve on the thing and it's not at all user-friendly.

I broke into the word processing field on a dedicated machine made by Wang. Actually, I used a manual typewriter for several years, then the US Army set me in front of a teletype machine. I was able to type as fast as it could take the keystrokes, which came out to sixty WPM.

My first computer based word processor was WordStar, which I thought was pretty cool. I remember it costing me something like $300, and that was back in the day when a dollar was worth 85 cents.

I worked in an office that used Word Poorfect, and I despised it more than I ever despised any other program that side of freecell (which is a very easy way for me to throw two or three hours down the toilet). I brought my own copy of WordStar in, and used that until they graduated to Windows, when I upgraded my copy of WordStar to WSW. Eventually they got to having Word 98, then the entire MSO2K suite, which I trained in and acquired reasonable proficiency in Word, Access (database manager), and Front Page (HTML editor).

Has anyone tried the free OpenOffice.org suite of text, spreadsheet, presentations and database software. It is based on the StarOffice product from Sun Microsystems. OpenOffice is to Microsoft Office what Mozilla Firefox is to Internet Explorer. Sorry....no helpers. I currently have F1 robot helper on MS Word at work. I've tried Merlin, the dog, the cat and the clip. I wish someone would come up with more assistants (like all the graemlins). A nice jib-jab version of "W" as my Word assistant would make my day.

THANKS! That is way cool; I'm going to download it this weekend and give it an old fashioned "Indiana Try." My 41 year-old brain is of the old school, give me board games, and the old atari classics anytime (Asteroids, Pac-Man, Warlords, Missile Command, Dig Dug), and of course AZTEC (however, I do dabble occasionally in Tapper).

I have never gotten into the new gaming systems. They take away from too many other hobbies and CHORES!

Maybe I should boot up my Mac Classic II and play a round of RISK for good measure. 15 years later, it's still operating. Even the kids won't touch it.

We used Wordstar here at work until it was simply impractical to do so. For those who learned to type using a typewriter, it is probably the next best thing to a Wang (which I used when I was in the Navy). I started using WordPerfect because it came packaged with my computer, in the days before Wordstar for Windows, and it was compatible with WordStar files. As I upgraded computers, I upgraded my WordPerfect as well.

We have Word here at the office, now, and have converted our WordStar files to suit, but I still prefer my WordPerfect. I use Word when I have too, but avoid it when I can.

BTW, I still have WordStar for Windows installed on this computer, so I can access the files in the archive which have not been switched over. Only the ones on 5 1/4" floppies are lost to us, since we do not have a computer equipped with 5 1/4" floppy drive.

As a Technical Writer, I can pretty much make word do anything I want it to do (like a pet or kid). :p

The application that I truly dislike, as I find it TOO cumbersome, is FrameMaker. It's usually a 50-50 split of those in my profession who prefer it to Word when creating large documents and manuals.

I have been around a ton of apps, and I still find FrameMaker not to my liking. Again, just my preference to use Word.

You can get (a)pets, (b)kids, and (c)Word to do what you want?

Shap, if you need to convert those files on 5-1/4" floppies, I have a drive that will read them (PC format, SD, DD, HD are all fine), and I can copy them to a 3-1/2" disc, or email them to you.
