Opus18 #4 string quartet 2nd movement

Postby Mussette » Sun Feb 12, 2006 2:11 am

Having a hard time figuring out the cello entrance...the first forte, written with staccato marks...how loud? Some people coach that entrance and subsequent entrances as loud and boistrous...a forte also appears later on in that movement without the staccato marks...how are they different? I guess I hear that first forte as a subtle somewhat haughty statement of things to come.

Hi Mussette, welcome to the Pit! :)

Being a singer and not a string player, I may be wrong in my interpretation, BUT...

A forte is a forte, whether staccato or legato. I suppose staccato notes at a forte dynamic could be construed as "boistrous", but as for relative dynamics between forte staccato and forte legato, there should be no real difference in volume, only in duration.
