I think the statistic would be the same if you left out "who cut me off or pull in front of me". And maybe even higher. Whenever I am in the car and look at another driver, I would say that it is rare to see that person NOT on the phone. Makes me wonder about people. Are they just lonely? Can't they go ANYWHERE by themselves?

Remember Aint Bee? Usually in the kitchen, usually on her feet, generally working on something? Speaking for the Aint Bees of the world, Mayberry is well lost. I could go on like this for a long time. Don't encourage me. The "good old days" were a lot of work for most of us. Only a few, a privileged few, got to go fishing whenever they wanted.

So now, with all these labour-saving appliances, we have to have a cell-phone, a blackberry, a pager, a fax machine, and an answering machine because we can't afford to miss that all-important message if we do go fishing.

Microwave ovens don't save time, they just allow us to shift the time that used to be spent fixing meals to time spent working, taking calls from tele-marketers, running kids halfway across the State to their next soccer game, or attending one of the endless stream of meetings we attend because we had all this time to ourselves, which we volunteered away so we didn't get bored.

I can remember lots of people fishing on a Saturday afternoon down by the spillway. Not all of them were "priveledged", many of them just included fishing in their priorities.

I realize how easy and convenient things are today. Not putting it down as I have indulged in the fast pace get things done yesterday society.

Priorities.

We can all finish work tomorrow if it came down to it. Have to start taking care of our spiritual needs more and realize the work won;t go away if I complete something today. You'll only get MORE WORK.

Before going on vacation I asked my boss if he wanted a number to reach me in the event of an emergency. He said NO. Vacation is Vacation. Go have a good time and relax. GREAT BOSS!

Remember when everything was closed on Sundays.

I can see we have different viewpoints on this, Shapley. I let my answering machine deal with the telemarketers - I never answer my land line anymore unless it's a number I recognize. Caller ID lets me know. My cell phone is a wonderful convenience, and text messages work just like passing notes in class used to.

Re the kitchen laborsavers - cooking is easier now than it used to be. Takes less time, food quality is better.

I have more time for reading and hobbies than my mother did. (Mind you, I don't go fishing. I like my fish neatly wrapped in plastic, ready for the pan, thank you very much.)

I suppose the trick is to use the technology, vice letting the technology use you, and set your own priorities. Including fishing, if that's what you want to do.

I love caller ID. It allows me to answer the phone with some smarmy comment when Selma calls.



I've had the base unit for 20 years now. Works great.

I had an Oster Kitchen Center. Wore it out. Moved up to sturdier equipment after I pitched it.

If I break the current stuff, I'll have to shop for commercial machinery. I could do that!!

Wore it out? Oh my. This one gets fairly regular use, and it's still going strong. The only thing wrong with it is I'm missing the little knob on the beater release.

Makes great ice cream.

Animal Planet just had a clip of a chimp dancing the macarena. Fairly well, too - better than some wedding guests I've seen.

That Oster thing has one power unit (not up to Cuisinart or Kitchenaid standards) and the connection to the various apparati is a kind of plastic serrated wheel thing. I wore the points off round, then snapped, then I went shopping.

My wife and I saw Gallagher about a year ago at
Westbury,NY. Better to see him live than on TV.
We were about half way back in the audience so we were in no danger of getting Sledge-O-Matic'd

I cann't give my opinion on the comedian as I have only seen him on TV.

What I really dont understand is the people who are leaving their houses or apartments still in their driveways and dialing the phone. I just dont understand that.

When I was an office furniture insatller I worked with and older man, about 70 and he would comment about phone booths that can go 70mph

Also I just witnessed a motorcycle accident the other day where a person from New York was on their phone trying to make a left and only looked one way(right) and never saw the motorcycle and took him out and never knew what happened. Luckily the the rider was ok and definatly very upset.
