New program issues

Postby Schmeelkie » Mon Apr 24, 2006 9:09 am

OK - I see we've gone to a new BB program. When I tried to go from the 'Current BB postings' on the home page, it didn't let me - had to cut and paste the URL....hope I won't have to do that every time....

Also - where have all the pictures gone? URL's are there, but I'm not seeing the pictures....Any solution for that?

Thanks bunches!

Chris says that he's working on on the pictures, gigantic threads, and I hope he also gets the private messages back. OT also mourns his messages, says he needs them back.

Do you notice that we have more smilies? Cool! 8)

New program issues

Postby Shapley » Mon Apr 24, 2006 10:11 am

I also notice that the 'most recent posts' is missing. It has been replaced with 'view posts since your last visit', which is nice, unless you visit and have to leave before reviewing all the posts. Then you have to browse to find any you may have missed.

One suggestion, on the topics list, if it is possible, it could be set up so that clicking on the bars at the top will arrange view accordingly, as it does with most Windows programs. Thus, clicking on the 'last post' bar will reveal the posts in order of the most recent postings. clicking on the 'author' bar will arrange them by author, etc.

Just a suggestion.

Help! I'm lost......
I hope I can figure this out before too long......

Lots of emoticons, I see :). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the much desired green-with-envy will show up soon. "Mr Green" doesnt quite fill the bill.

[editted to add:]
I like that screen that shows up after adding a post - view post or return to forum. Very nice, thankyou!

No more "Today's Active topics"
Doesn't sort by most recent post first.
Actual subject being posted on doesn't show in "Post a Reply".
Method of clicking to most recent post is obtuse.
I lost my saved pm's!!!
Seems to automatically log me off if I walk away from the computer for five minutes.
I miss the colorful smilies.
We can no longer title links.
No more profile photos!

BTW, according to H.R.H., B.com e-mail won't be back.

So, why the change?

I administer a phpBB board and we implemented a "view all posts in the last 24 hours" link to solve the problem of visiting without viewing all the new posts. I can share the code with Chris if he is interested.

That's the beauty of phpBB, there is a whole world of open source developers for this BB software. Just about any problem you can think of has probably already been solved by someone, somewhere.

If that's the case, then why is this one starting with so many problems?

OT,

RE:If that's the case, then why is this one starting with so many problems?

I would suspect that this is the "straight from the box" version, with all the bugs included. Just like any software, you install the boxed version, and then debug. Have patience. I'm sure they'll get the bugs out, and we'll all be back to arguin' and fightin' afore you know it. :D

Thanks BigJon, I'd love the code if you could send it. Just email me clarsen@beethoven.com

And yea, this is pretty much straight out of the box. I didn't have enough time to fully test the implementation before migrating but I am working on the bugs as much as I can. Most of these bugs are a result of the conversion from the old system to the new I have to dig into the code to find out where things are going wrong. Sorry for the problems!

Chris,

No sweat man! It's not like we're paying for this or anything! :D

Keep up the good work, but for now, it's time for a beer!

It's an upgrade!

Postby Selma in Sandy Eggo » Mon Apr 24, 2006 4:23 pm

Honestly! This is not so bad!

There are a few, ah, undocumented features (aka bugs) in the new version. I have been in the middle of worse migrations, though. And TM has administered a few that he's told stories of. Remember the field that was recoded, to the disgust of the accountants that actually used the data field?

And then there's the time that our lo-bid contractor IT department improved the email into complete non-operation. That one took down the entire PAC FLT Navy and Marine Corps for six hours. I could hear admirals yelling, six buildings away. They'd still be having the fit, if they hadn't all run out of air.

The new board version has a number of interesting changes, and I'm sure we'll adjust, and that Chris and Sarge will work out the minor issues. For complete issue list, see OT's post above.

Mind you, I miss the "today's active" button myself.

Did you notice, we can change font color? And size?

Sorry, but in comparison to the larger issues, font color & size - big whoop.

Add to the list of minuses: No hint of what the most recent post on a topic is without going into the thread(i.e., no lead-ins as were on "Today's Active Topics").

Was this software free?

Today's Active Topix would be a beeeg help.
Chris, it looks like you've got job security for some time to come!
Good luck getting all the bugs.

Pic, we were warned, did you miss the post?

OT, I think it is a pretty impressive startup considering that all the old threads were preserved. Some board just punt and start with all fresh threads.

Something awesome about the new software is we can delete our last post. Yeah! No more double posts hanging around! :D

One tip for new users, hit "enter" once before you start your reply to a quoted message. phpBB doesn't skip a line after a quote like the old software did. It makes your posts more readable.

Oh yeah, thanks for the wide format!

Another cool thing about phpBB is the administrator can add on a spell checker. We use http://spellingcow.com/
