Blazing Search

Postby BigJon@Work » Mon Apr 24, 2006 6:39 pm

Have you tried the search function? It is blazing fast. Now I can find those flatulent leftist posts that I want to throw in someone's face hundreds of times quicker than before. :P

the thread called "this is the thread" in "musical notes" is messed up. I can't get to the newest posts.

OT, I think it is a pretty impressive startup considering that all the old threads were preserved. Some board just punt and start with all fresh threads.

Something awesome about the new software is we can delete our last post. Yeah! No more double posts hanging around! :D

One tip for new users, hit "enter" once before you start your reply to a quoted message. phpBB doesn't skip a line after a quote like the old software did. It makes your posts more readable.

Oh yeah, thanks for the wide format!

Man, for somebody who wouldn't give anyone a piece of computer of advice without a bill before, you're all over the place putting spin on this software like a turbosupercharged top!

I NEVER SAW ANY WARNING.

Impressive?!! I spent half the day trying to find old threads. There are about a dozen recently discussed topics that may as well have been deleted because I'll never find them.

Delete double posts? Big deal. We were able to do that before. It's called erasing one of the posts. I'd trade that for being able to get a hint of what was being discussed without going into the thread, plus PROFILE PHOTOS, not to mention the pm's I lost, in a New York minute.

Let me guess: You sold B.com on this crap.

Just takes a little time to "Customize"

I like the new board. I am noticing a speedier transition between pages....
which is great for someone like me who needs to be patient.....

F.A.Q.

Postby Sarge » Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:47 am

One of the coolest functions of this phpBB system, is the built-in F.A.Q.

If you're not familiar with this system, or need a great reference, please checkout the FORUM FAQ.

Thank you again for your feedback and participation while we customize and configure the forums...

It seems to me we now have the wall. I'm a nucular(emulating our Head Chickenhawk) mechanic, so of course I'd rather have the sledgehammer.

BigJon,
i dont use b.com on weekends. Mostly I check today's active topix in the am, respond, check back occasionally during the day but since little happens, I often dont go back to the board after lunch.
I remember seeing a post from Chris and thinking 'oh crap, I have meetings the rest of the day and no time this weekend. I sure could have used a full week warning.' I'm thinking the post came Thursday afternoon, on a weekend I have Friday off, and with the switch occurring Saturday. Not a lot of head's up time, in other words.

I'm not agin the new format. I'm sure there are lots of advantages. Its not as intuitive as the old one, and the absence of Today's Active Topics is a big negative, that I am sure can be and am hopeful will be remedied. Im sure I will find the positives as I become more familiar with the new system. I'm a tad annoyed at the moment at being logged out everytime I go inactive for a few minutes, but this too, I can survive.

Some of the new format is much clearer (the button choices at top of screen like FAQ, Search etc), tho I find the search function a bit harder to use, it is much faster indeed.

Unfortunately, OT cant log in every day all day, so he will miss end of the day posts, and weekend posts too. He had some interesting stuff stored in pm's like Haggis' history of the middle east. Its a shame thats gone, because the moderators long ago deleted the thread it was part of. I know that had he seen the warning, he'd have stayed up til all hours clearing his pm's and saving them to his hard drive.

I remind myself that 'the only constant is change'. (attributed to me, some time ago).

BTW, while we're at cool formating options, can we get line-thru and underline? Those would be handy indeed! ( I miss the sticky the tongue out guy too. The devils are cute tho.)

Two more things:

1. Can we sort topics differently, as in most recent to the top instead of by order of origination? If a topic doesn't get posted on between visits to the BBB, then it goes back to being lost in the pack. Having to do a search every time I want to see what's happening on a long thread is ridiculous.

2. Is there any way to give a lead-in of what was posted under "Topics Posted On Since Your Last Visit" section?

Thanks for the message topic showing in the overall index! Much more informative than simply the name of the last poster in the category.

The improvements arrive apace! This is good to see. Thank you Chris and Sarge for the hard work and for listening to our sometimes less-than-ideally phrased requests for improvement and taking them seriously.

Marye, try the FAQ.
But be aware, there is still nothing like Today's Active Topics, so its more work than it used to be, to see 'whats the buzz'.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed (this new baby is less than a week old, after all. )

I like: the option at the top to return the the forum I was just in (I used to wear out the 'back' button) and the option at the bottom to jump to any forum.

Piq, I'm not sure why not going to the forum in all weekend is a problem for you and OT. If you click the "view posts since last visit" you'll see everything since the last time you interacted with the forums and set your cookie. That's far better, in my mind, than the old link which just went back an arbitrary amount of time to look for new posts. I often missed a bunch of stuff that was posted on Fri evening and Saturday with that link.

I do agree that the preview of post text was nice in the old system. When I get the posts in last 24 hours code to Chris, it can be modified to show a preview of the first 200 words of the post or any number he would choose.

Very, very rude and again a sign of not doing your research.

phpBB is an open source code that is freely available and fully modifiable. There is a wide community of developers who have solved most of the problems that have been mentioned. It is up to the administrators to decide if they will implement the modifications which can be a big job because they overwrite localizations sometimes. I've been helping administer a phpBB for the last year and a half, so I thought I might offer my help here. But if I am treated rudely, I don't need to do anything.

Yes I am an enthusiast of phpBB because it puts the power into the hands of the people, shouldn't a person like yourself be in approval of such a scheme? phpBB has done wonders for building community in my other organization, I hope it does wonders here too.

What she's referring to is neither of us saw any warning(in my case I never saw it) in enough time to do anything to save our pm's.

As for "View Posts since Last Visit", plus the fact that the program ditches posts between sessions and sorts them in order of origination means they get lost in the shuffle continuously.

FireFox is also open source freeware, but I seem to recall you deriding it quite a bit. It comes out of the box easy to use and functional, and you don't lose half of your information in the transition.

I get on a BB to post, not to tweak and search.

I find it interesting that now you are all over the BBB offering help, when before you would only give anyone advice for a fee.

I also find it interesting for someone who has a habit of being pretty abrasive and insulting(without basis, as a rule) to suddnely go all Emily Post.

Since the topic isn't listed on the "Post A Reply" window, I now have to go out (and right back in, I'm sure) to see where I am again in order to post something else pertinent.

Another issue:

You can't click and insert a smilie anywhere within previously typed text. It automatically puts it at the end of the text. The only way to insert one in previously typed text is to type it out.

I noticed the forums now sort in most-recent-post-first order.

Thank you, Chris & Sarge! :)
