Top 10 orchestras in North America

Postby bignaf » Thu Aug 17, 2006 12:46 pm

Due to public demand, and due to an abscense of Hal, Piqaboo will do this top 10 thread. just PM Piqaboo with your favorite (if you're debating between a sentimental fav and a more reasoned fav, I suggest going with reason...) orchestras in North America. Piq'll post the stats Hal used to, but I don't think I'll revive the series thingy, where the person who most closely matches picks the next one. I soon won't have time.
OK, let's begin. no leaking of favorites!

Sorry, Big,

I'm not good at ranking orchestras. And I've seen very few live, so I refrained from submitting a list. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings or anything.

most people haven't heard 10 different NA orchestras, so it's not a good topic. but it sorta was Piq's idea. :)

Dont have to be live.
Recordings count.

Ok to submit partial lists.

After lists are posted, we can discuss and re-order if need be.

Since orchestras' quality varies over time with the various staffing and conductors, it might be a good idea to include a time frame and/or a conductor.

Was the Boston Pops better under Fiedler, Williams, or Lockhart?

What is your opinion?

We could do two lists - over any time, and current.

Piq, do you want to do it? I'm moving to New Haven on Thursday, so I don't think I can do this anymore. I can send you the info.

I think it is possible to tell the quality of an orchestra regardless of the conductor. the conductor is a different parameter. but different timeframes are certainly critical.

I think we should petition the powers-that-be to create another forum for Musical Games. This would make it easier to find the currently running games, such as 30Q, Top Ten Lists, or Opera Headlines.

As it is, they sometimes get lost amid the other topics, especially if you don't post for a few days due to vacation or whatever.

Sure, I can keep track of lists.
Lets play for a week or so, then I'll post.
Or sooner, if the whim hits.
